THE FLOODGATE
Overview
- Location: Hope
- Address: Seedway 3
- Surroundings: Adjacent to Local Guarding Troopers Station of Hope
Founded by Vicky Ahuja — born blind in 2572 aboard the Last Frontier and once a researcher at Last Frontier University — The Floodgate is Hope’s premier Space Drinks Inc. bar. Vicky leased a “Bar‑Desk‑as‑a‑Service” package, complete with a prefab counter, refrigeration coils, and a Butler Bot barkeep, and stocked exclusively with Space Drinks labels.
Here, local fishermen, farmers, and agricultural laborers gather nightly: midweek for spirited karaoke, weekends for live Earth Pop performances on the tiny raised stage, and every other evening for games of Twenty One or darts under the hum of classic pop music.
After the Great War ended in March 2631, The Floodgate was nationalized by the Federal Confederation and converted into Hope’s Federal Hostel and Saloon. Vicky remained on as host, welcoming guests to the new federally run saloon while preserving the bar’s beloved traditions.
Architectural Significance
- Construction Material: A patchwork structure assembled from salvaged cargo containers, a Space Drinks Inc. prefab bar module, reclaimed timber posts, and reused spacecraft components such as shuttle-canopy panels and alloy bracing.
- Floors: 1
- Façade: A visibly grown, improvised frontage — mismatched container walls reinforced with rough wooden beams, scrap-metal brackets, and patched insulation panels. A faded Space Drinks canopy hangs above the entrance, sun-bleached, stitched, and slightly askew.
- Design Purpose: Built for speed and sociability rather than permanence. The Floodgate reflects Hope’s frontier pragmatism: start with a prefab core, expand as needed, repair what breaks, and let function dictate form.
Building Structure
Main Hall – Bar & Gaming Area
- Space Drinks Bar Counter: Styled in Space Drinks livery. Staffed by a Butler Bot that taps kegs of Space Beer, Gravity Grog, and other Space Drinks Inc. labels.
- Gaming Nooks: Three Twenty One tables and a dartboard alcove mounted on reclaimed shuttle‑canopy panels
- Performance Stage: Small raised wooden platform with basic holo‑mic setup for karaoke and live acts
- Seating: Mixed stools at the bar and six communal timber tables
- Restroom: One unisex stall with AuroraSan fixtures, tucked behind the stage
Exterior Grounds
- Front Patio: Gravelled area with oil‑lantern posts, offering perch stools and a view down Seedway
- Tie‑Rings: Iron rings along the low timber fence for patrons’ Hoos
Look and Feel
The Floodgate glows like a warm wound cut into Seedway’s muddy spine, permanently suspended in twilight. There is no sunset here — only a constant, low amber light diffused through humid air, river mist, and the pale sky above the Arla terraces. Lanterns and holo-signage spill through open container doors, slatted timber walls, and hanging tarps, casting soft reflections across wet planks and churned soil.
Inside, sound carries freely. Laughter, pop hooks, and off-key karaoke drift out into the street without ever feeling late or early. The prefab bar counter gleams beneath patched lanterns as the Butler Bot works with tireless precision, filling mugs while Vicky Ahuja’s voice cuts through the din — welcoming, teasing, commanding without sight. Patrons crowd mismatched tables, muddy boots scraping across reinforced floor panels, shouting encouragement toward the tiny stage.
Outside, settlers linger against railings and container walls, drinks in hand, Hoos tethered to iron rings just steps away. The Guarding Trooper Station next door looms close — disciplined, watchful, always present — yet here, order softens. In Hope’s unending twilight, The Floodgate is warmth, noise, and human closeness pressed directly against authority, refusing to dim.
