MEDICAL STATION OF NEW KOUROU (BETA AGE)
Overview
- Location: Public Services Ring, New Kourou
- Address: NE Thoreau Road 4
- Surroundings: Flanked by the Hospital of New Kourou on one side and the Pharmacy of New Kourou on the other, forming a compact medical cluster in the ring’s eastern quadrant.
Established in 2626 under the Human Settlement Plan, the Medical Station of New Kourou became the settlement’s principal general-care facility. Except for a single Chief Physician, all diagnostics, emergency response, and routine treatment are carried out by Medical Bots — a workflow settlers already accept without hesitation, having relied on automated care aboard the Last Frontier.
Services ranged from routine check-ups to emergency trauma care, extensive vaccination campaigns, and nano-therapies.
Architectural Significance
- Construction Material: Recycled hull composites and bio-plastic panels salvaged from the spaceship Last Frontier.
- Floors: 2
- Design Aesthetic: Improvised starship salvage—corridor walls of mismatched bulkhead plates, exposed conduit runs, and repurposed shuttle seats; function-first, with only minimal paint strips and recycled skylight panels to soften the austere interior.
- Ventilation: Medical-grade air-circulation ensures sterile surgical and diagnostic environments.
Building Structure
Ground Floor
- Reception & Triage Desk: Managed by a Butler Bot that registers arrivals and performs preliminary scans.
- Emergency Room: Six-bed trauma bay with surgical stabilisation pods, auto-sterile field projectors, and crash-cart Medical Bots.
- General Medicine Offices (3): For routine consultations, vaccinations, and minor procedures.
- Public W.C.: Two unisex restroom stalls off the main corridor for waiting relatives or discharged patients, featuring the AuroraSan System.
Second Floor
- Preparation / Diagnostics Rooms (2): Full-body bioscanner suites and nano-prep stations for pre-surgical work-ups.
- Nanotechnology Lab: Secure lab where medical nanites are calibrated, sterilised, and stored.
- Administrative Office: Workspace of the Chief Physician and support staff.
- Break Room & Staff W.C (AuroraSan System).: Rest area for night-shift personnel.
Look and Feel
Inside the Medical Station, improvised practicality overshadowed polish. Salvaged bulkheads and mismatched floor panels from the Last Frontier formed narrow corridors; many still bore faded hazard stencils and serial plates in their original Star-Navy grey. Overhead, fluorescent strips scavenged from cargo bays flickered unevenly, while coolant lines and cable bundles ran exposed along the ceiling—patched with whatever gaffer tape or scrap plating the construction crew could find in 2626.
Every diagnostic console and autoclave looked visibly older than the building itself, their casings dented and paint-scratched from the crash. Yet indicator LEDs glowed a reassuring green: ship-grade machinery, repurposed but still precise. Some Medical Bots rolled on repainted chassis that once belonged to maintenance droids; their vocalizers occasionally crackled with clipped shipboard code words. The scent was a blend of antiseptic, recycled air, and the faint metallic tang of coolant—an unmistakable reminder that high-tech care here was powered by jury-rigged life-support parts rather than purpose-built hospital infrastructure.
Patients waiting for triage sat on bolted-down shuttle seats, upholstery threadbare yet sturdy. Wall screens — salvaged cabin viewports refitted with improvised frames — looped public-health advisories atop static-flecked backgrounds, occasionally glitching to a long-gone navigation overlay. The result was a space that felt both cutting-edge and makeshift: a stopgap clinic keeping settlers alive until something better could be built — though “better” never quite arrived in the Beta Age.
Roles and Responsibilities
Human Staff
* Chief Physician (1): Oversees all services, liaises with the Hospital, authorises nano-therapies
Automated Staff
- Medical Bots / Care & ER (6): Diagnostics, emergency stabilisation, precision drug & nano delivery, post-op monitoring
- Medical Bot / Lab (1): Genetic & biochemical testing, pathogen ID, inventory of nano supplies
- Butler Bot / Reception (1): Records management, appointment scheduling, triage routing
- Cleaning Bots (2): Continuous sanitisation of treatment rooms, waste-bin cycling, nightly deep-clean of corridors and restrooms
Public Access, Operating Hours and Operational Rhythm
- Public Access: Walk-ins accepted; critical cases triaged immediately.
- Shift Schedule:
- 6:00 AM – 2:00 PM — Consultations & morning diagnostics
- 2:00 PM – 10:00 PM — Specialist procedures & evening ER peak
- 10:00 PM – 6:00 AM — Overnight emergency cover & in-patient monitoring
- Operating Days: 24 / 7 service.
Security Measures
- Alert Workflow: Reception Bot auto-pings the local Guarding Troopers Headquarters if violence or security breach detected.
- Patrol Coverage: Guarding Troopers circulate the Public Services Ring per shift.
Player Interaction Possibilities (Legal and Illegal)
Legal interactions:
- Obtain advanced treatment for wounds or exotic illnesses.
- Escort a critical patient from an outpost to New Kourou.
- Source vaccine batches for a distant reservation.
- Consult lab archives for data on a new pathogen.
Illegal interactions:
- Steal nanites or controlled pharmaceuticals from the lab.
- Hack Medical Bot routines to fake health records.
- Smuggle an injured fugitive through reception under a false ID.
- Plant malware in bioscanner systems to hide an infection.
Tactical Advice for Dungeon Masters
The station offers tension between life-saving tech and scarce resources.
Adventure Hook Example
- Desperate Rescue: Three bank robbers from Hope are on the run—one took a Laser Gun blast to the legs and needs urgent surgery. They storm the Medical Station of Morningstar, holding two innocents hostage and forcing the Chief Physician to operate under duress. The local Guarding Troopers Chief tasks the party with a covert extraction: disguised as a New Kourou Courier Service drug delivery, they must slip in, secure the doctor, neutralize the robbers, and safely evacuate both the injured outlaw and the hostages without igniting a full‑scale jailbreak.
