FEDERAL COURIER CARAVANS
Overview
Federal Courier Caravans are the lifeline of the Federal Confederation on VOI 700 D, ensuring the regular movement of goods, resources, and passengers between the human reservations of Morningstar, Hope, New Kourou, and Firetown. Operated by the Federal Courier Service and overseen by the Federal Allotment Agency, these caravans traverse the challenging terrains of the Dark Side and the Habitual Belt, operating on fixed schedules that mirror the precision of rail logistics.
Caravan Structure
Each caravan comprises 21 Federal Courier Carts: 20 goods carts and 1 passenger cart, each pulled by two Hoos, the reliable draft animals of the Federal Confederation. This consistent structure ensures efficiency, scalability, and security for long-distance travel.
- Goods Carts: Carry a variety of resources, including wood, food, copper, and manufactured goods.
- Passenger Cart: Accommodates up to 10 passengers.
Routes and Stops
Federal Courier Caravans follow predetermined routes, connecting all human reservations in a single cycle. Each route is meticulously planned to maximize efficiency and minimize downtime.
Morningstar to Hope (50 km):
- Cargo: Starts with 20 wagons of wood, 10 of which are initially empty.
- Stop: Five wagons of wood are unloaded in Hope.
- Crew Change: Coachmen are replaced at the Federal Hostel and Saloon in Hope.
Hope to New Kourou (80 km):
- Cargo: Nine wagons of wood and five wagons of food are unloaded in New Kourou.
- Loading: New Kourou sends clothing, personal care products, and copper-based goods toward Firetown.
- Crew Change: Coachmen are replaced at the Federal Hostel and Saloon in New Kourou.
New Kourou to Firetown (100 km):
- Cargo: Wagons with wood, food, clothing, and personal care products are unloaded in Firetown.
- Loading: Empty wagons are filled with copper and copper-based products for the return trip.
- Break: Coachmen rest at the Halfway Inn for six hours during transit.
- Crew Change: Coachmen are replaced at the Federal Hostel and Saloon in Firetown.
Return Journey (Firetown to Morningstar):
- Route: Mirrors the outward journey in reverse, with stops at New Kourou and Hope for unloading, loading, and crew changes.
Schedule and Timing
- Daily Operations: One caravan departs each day, ensuring consistent coverage and delivery.
- Travel Time: Each one-way trip takes approximately 30 hours, including: 9 hours travel time between key locationsnand 6-hour rest break at the Halfway Inn. Loading, unloading, and crew changes at each reservation.
Logistics and Coordination
The Federal Courier Service employs a sophisticated logistics network to maintain the caravans’ schedules and efficiency:
- Fixed Timetables: Ensure reliability for settlements dependent on deliveries.
- GAIA Optimization: The artificial intelligence system oversees route planning and resource allocation, ensuring balanced operations.
- Crew Management: Coachmen work in shifts, with breaks at designated Federal Hostels and the Halfway Inn to avoid fatigue and maintain safety.
Security Measures
Caravans are vital to the Confederation’s survival, making their protection a priority:
- Deputies of the Federal Sheriff: Each caravan is accompanied by four Deputies to safeguard goods and personnel.
- Secure Loading Procedures: Stops at reservations include detailed checks to prevent theft or sabotage.
- Strategic Break Locations: Stops like the Halfway Inn are secured by additional Deputies to ensure caravan safety.
- Emergency Firework Displays: Each coachman is equipped with a firework display concealed under their seat. In the event of a security threat or an emergency, the coachman can launch the display to alert nearby Federal Sheriff's Department Deputies, caravan guards, or settlements along the route. The fireworks include a distinct pattern and color unique to the Federal Courier Service for immediate recognition.
- Cargo Locks: Cargo is secured with mechanical locks, requiring coded keys to prevent unauthorized access.
- Whistle: Each coachman wears a wooden whistle around his neck to alert the caravan in the event of a thread or a dangerous incident.
