ZUGZWANG (STRATEGY GAME)
Zugzwang is the most popular exohuman parlor game in the Federal Confederation. In this two-player strategy game, the aim is to either move all your pieces to the opponent's base line or prevent your opponent from doing so. The game is designed to be simple, resource-efficient, and sustainable, requiring only a small board and simple playing pieces.
Zugzwang“ is a term borrowed from the German language, meaning “compulsion to move.” The game encourages strategic thinking while being quick to play. Its minimalistic design makes it sustainable and easy to produce, adhering to the principles of resource efficiency.
Materials
- A square game board with 5×5 squares, which could be drawn on paper, in the sand, or even etched onto a wooden surface.
- 5 game pieces for each player. These could be small stones, coins, or little wooden pieces.
Objective
The aim is to either move all of your pieces into the opponent's base line or block your opponent from doing so.
Rules
- Players take turns placing one of their pieces onto any empty square. This continues until all pieces are on the board.
- Once all pieces are placed, players take turns moving one of their pieces one square in any cardinal direction: forward, backward, left, or right. Diagonal moves are not allowed.
- A piece can capture an opponent's piece by moving into its square. The captured piece is then removed from the board.
- A move is mandatory; there is no option to “pass” a turn.
- A piece that reaches the opponent's base line is safe from capture but remains on the board.
- If a player is unable to make a valid move, they lose the game
The game ends when one player moves all of their pieces into the opponent's base line or when a player cannot make a valid move.
Tactical Advice for Dungeon Masters
Zugzwang is more than a game — it’s a reflection of ExoHuman values in the Gamma Age: logic, restraint, and resilience under pressure. Its simplicity and portability make it a great roleplay element across all kinds of settings, from urban cafés in New Kourou to worn-out boards in Guarding Trooper barracks.
Use Zugzwang to:
- Establish Character Personality: Let NPCs or players reveal their mindset through how they play — cautious, reckless, strategic, or ruthless.
- Resolve Disputes or Competitions: Replace combat or debate scenes with a Zugzwang match that determines the outcome of an argument, a bet, or a political challenge.
- Introduce Cultural Commentary: Use the game’s rules and its “no-pass” principle to mirror broader Gamma Age tensions — the feeling of being constantly forced to act within limited options.
- Add Layers to Interrogations or Dialogues: Have an NPC play while talking, with each move offering clues, misdirection, or subtle commentary on the conversation.
