ZATHURR (The Vazhak Maw)

Overview

Zathurr, also known to Exohumans as the Vazhak Maw, is an enigmatic and possibly apex predator believed to inhabit the deep ice fields of the Vazhak Region on the northern edge of the Dark Side of VOI 700 D.

Due to the extreme conditions of the region and the inaccessibility of its habitat, no direct studies of Zathurr exist. Everything known about the creature stems from fragmented expedition logs, survivor accounts from the ill-fated 2628 rescue mission, and scientific speculation from researchers at the Danah-Wanah University.

While some biologists believe Zathurr to be a biological entity adapted to the harshest conditions on the planet, others argue that it could be an entirely new category of extremophile life, existing in a way that challenges known evolutionary principles. What little data exists suggests that Zathurr is unlike any other lifeform known to Exohumans.

Physique and Appearance

The true form of Zathurr remains unknown — no confirmed sightings or physical samples have ever been recovered. However, survivor accounts from the 2628 expedition and geological anomalies in the ice fields suggest a massive, subterranean lifeform capable of burrowing through ice and lying dormant for unknown periods of time.

Theorized Physical Traits (Based on Survivor Accounts and Danah-Wanah Research)

  • Size: Unknown—estimations suggest a length exceeding 30 meters, though some theories propose a distributed or non-singular organism.
  • Weight: Impossible to determine—some argue it is a singular creature, while others believe it exists as a network of multiple organisms operating as one.
  • Exoskeletal Adaptation: Survivors described an ice-like “shell” or armor covering parts of its body, potentially as a form of extreme camouflage.

Presumably Special Features:

  • Feeding Apparatus: No confirmed visuals exist, but seismic readings suggest a large, retractable maw with vibrational detection organs, allowing it to sense movement through the ice.
  • Metabolic Stasis: The Danah-Wanah biologists theorize Zathurr enters a low-energy dormancy state, lying beneath the ice for centuries before brief periods of activity.
  • Heat Sensitivity: Expedition logs indicate it might detect warmth and movement, attacking anything that generates enough thermal contrast against the frozen landscape.

Game Mechanics (Speculative)

  • Armor Class (AC): Unknown — Presumably 20 (Hardened exoskeletal adaptation and ice-layered camouflage)
  • Hit Points (HP): 400 (30d12 + 100) (Theorized resilience and metabolic dormancy)
  • Speed: 5 ft. (burrowing through ice), 20 ft. (emerging attack, short-range lunge only)

Attacks

  • Abyssal Maw: +12 to hit, 5d12 + 8 piercing damage. A creature hit must make a DC 18 Strength saving throw or be dragged beneath the ice and restrained. On failure, the creature takes 3d10 cold damage per turn as Zathurr slowly crushes and absorbs them into the ice.
  • Seismic Pulse: Zathurr emits a resonant vibration through the ice, forcing all creatures within 60 feet to make a DC 20 Constitution saving throw or suffer 6d8 thunder damage and be deafened and disoriented for 1 minute (disadvantage on Wisdom & Dexterity checks).
  • Glacial Collapse: If enough structural ice exists, Zathurr can cause a section of the landscape to shift. All creatures on the surface must make a DC 18 Dexterity saving throw or fall into a hidden crevasse, taking 8d6 bludgeoning damage and becoming prone.

Special Abilities

  • Dormant Predator: Zathurr remains hidden beneath the ice for years, only emerging when triggered by heat, seismic activity, or prey movement.
  • Subterranean Ambush: When dormant, Zathurr is undetectable by normal means, except through high-frequency seismic scans or biothermal monitoring.
  • Echo-Sensory Awareness: Zathurr can “see” by detecting the smallest vibrations in the ice, automatically pinpointing creatures within 300 feet.
  • Deep-Ice Camouflage: If motionless, Zathurr is completely indistinguishable from the frozen terrain, requiring a DC 25 Investigation check to be identified before attacking.

Behavior

Due to the lack of direct observation, researchers can only hypothesize about the nature of Zathurr’s hunting patterns. However, theories suggest the following:

  • Thermal Detection: Zathurr senses temperature changes — meaning torches, body heat, and energy signatures could attract its attention.
  • Long Dormancy Cycles: It likely spends centuries in hibernation, only surfacing to feed on whatever unlucky prey disturbs its resting ground.
  • Unknown Feeding Mechanism: Some theories suggest it swallows prey whole, while others believe it relies on a chemical or biological process to break down organic matter beneath the ice.
  • Limited Range: It likely does not roam beyond its chosen feeding ground—but what defines its territory remains unknown.

Reproduction and Lifecycle (Speculative)

Since no confirmed juvenile specimens have been identified, researchers at Danah-Wanah University can only theorize about how Zathurr propagates.

Theorized Reproductive Traits:

  • Asexual or Clonal Division? – If Zathurr is not a singular being, it may reproduce by budding or fragmenting into multiple organisms.
  • Spawning Grounds Beneath the Ice? – If it has a larval stage, it could exist far beneath the frozen layers, out of reach of Exohuman knowledge.
  • Extreme Longevity: Potentially outliving entire civilizations.

Theorized Mating and Growth Cycle:

  • Unknown Growth Rate: Some speculate younger Zathurr may never emerge, living entirely within deep ice.
  • Reproduction as an Icebound Colony? – Some biologists suggest Zathurr is not one entity, but many, existing in a hive-like state across a vast underground ecosystem.

Tactical Advice for Dungeon Masters

Zathurr should be used as a legendary, near-unkillable entity—not as a direct combat encounter. It is an environmental horror, something that cannot be fought but must be avoided.

  • “The Maw Awakens” – Players exploring the ice fields could accidentally wake Zathurr by triggering seismic activity, heat spikes, or excessive movement.
  • “Lost Among the Ice –” If a character is isolated, they may hear rumbling beneath them—a sign that Zathurr is stirring.
  • “No Escape” – Players could attempt to flee, only to find the landscape itself shifting, revealing deep fissures and unseen tunnels where Zathurr moves.

Zathurr is not an enemy — it is a force of nature.

Prey of:

  • None. If Zathurr is real, it is the top of the food chain.

Predator of:

  • Unknown—possibly seals, ice-dwelling organisms, or scavenged remains.
  • Theorized to consume anything generating significant heat signatures.
