SCENE 7 — ARRIVAL IN FIRETOWN
1 | Scene Overview
- Location: Firetown Courier Station · Firetown
- Type: Arrival · Transition · Urban Encounter
- Era: Beta Age
- Tone: Fierce · Crowded · Predatory Welcome
Atmosphere & Sensory Cues: Steam vents hiss under lantern light · shouts of porters and drivers · boots on volcanic stone · the burning wall flickering outside · a blind beggar’s voice threading through the noise
2 | Read-Aloud Descriptions
Initial Read-Aloud (Scene Opening)
The convoy creaks through the Firetown Gate — a slit of orange light between black volcanic walls. Steam curls from ground vents, glowing red beneath your carts
Ahead, the Firetown Courier Station rises from the frost — two stories of volcanic stone capped with a flickering neon sign: “Firetown Courier Station” A Pipe snakes along the ceiling, breathing out the warmth of the geothermal grid.
Inside, the air feels trapped — heavy, recycled, without a single window. Porters shout manifests and settlers queue at the postal counter with cracked hands and frozen letters. Lanterns throw shifting shadows across the black volcanic stone, and the air tastes of metal and boiled broth — more like a subterranean outpost than a station above ground.
Staged Read-Alouds (Progressive Descriptions)
| Trigger / Timing | Read-Aloud or Short Narrative Insert |
| — | — |
| Caravan halts in arrival yard | Hoos snort and stamp as the wagons brake beneath the station’s arched delivery doors. Porters rush in to unload ore crates while Joren Kett calls, “End of the line! Unload and log your cargo with the clerks!” |
| PCs enter the Courier Hall | The building exudes survival rather than comfort. Heat rises from floor grates, but every draft from the outer gates bites like ice. Settlers queue for letters, porters heave crates, and somewhere a canteen boils broth thick with tandora spice. |
| Good-bye to travel companions | Joren tightens his gloves. “Well — Firetown. Try not to lose everything tonight.” He smirks and turns to his wagon. Mira Reis waves softly, already moving toward Saloon Gloria. Hiram disappears into the postal crowd. |
| Stepping out onto the street | The moment you leave the station, Firetown hits you. Torchlight and neon merge into one restless glow, spilling from doors, vents, and barrel fires blazing at every corner. Steam seeps from grates and the ground seems to breathe. You can taste metal in the air. |
| Pickpocket incident (trigger) | A blind beggar bumps into you — his staff taps the ground, muttering thanks — and then he’s gone. Seconds later you notice your purse missing … or a bag of belongings vanished. You catch a flash of movement — the “blind” man running through the torch-lit crowd toward the Entertainment District. |
| If PCs chase him | He weaves between barrel fires and drunken crowds. Steam and neon blur into a maze of shadows. Failing a DEX check (Difficulty 12) — he vanishes into the District. Success — they corner him in an alley near the Nebula Fight Arena. |

6 | DM Notes
- Tone Reminder: Firetown hits different — heat, noise, and mistrust. The players arrive tired and hungry into a city that does not care.
- Structure: Arrival → Farewell → Pickpocket Incident → Choice (Chase or Let Go) → Food/Lodging → Firetown Hub Introduction.
- Hub Mechanic: After the pickpocket scene, Firetown switches from linear storytelling to a hub structure.
- Use the Firetown Hub Overview Table to present the settlement's available locations and activities. Let players freely decide where to go next. Each location is a self-contained micro-scene (e.g., Scene 8a–10) that can be visited in any order before returning to the main story arc. Encourage natural transitions (“You hear the sound of music from the Saloon Gloria” or “Steam hisses from the direction of the Nebula Arena”).
- DM Guidance:
- Treat the hub as a *living settlement*: events at one site can affect others (e.g., a fight in the Arena spreads rumors to the Red Wheel).
- Keep pacing tight: 1–2 key interactions per site before moving on.
- Use recurring NPCs (Mira Reis, Hiram Quill) to guide or connect scenes.
- Local PC Advantage: Elias Kim and Rogan Sokolov know the district layout and can guide others (+2 or advantage on navigation checks).
- Chase Scaling: If the party splits during the pickpocket pursuit, roll DEX vs DEX (DC 12); two total successes catch the thief. Failure adds a “Lost Belongings” flag, enabling a future retrieval side quest in the Entertainment District.
- Next Steps:
- Introduce the Firetown Hub Table as an *in-game travel map*.
- When players choose their next destination, load the corresponding sub-scene (Scene 8a–10).
- Once they pursue leads toward the Guarding Trooper Station, transition to Scene 11 (Main Mission).
