RATTLEBACK CRAWLER

Overview

The Rattleback Crawler, called “Shon-Haka” by the Orlanda Tribe, is a soft-bodied arthropod native to the leaf-dense floor of the Tropical Forest in the Asari Region of the Habitual Belt on VOI 700 D. Though small and slow-moving, it is instantly recognizable by the distinct vibrations it emits through the ground, warning larger animals and companions alike of its presence or potential danger.

Rattleback Crawlers are non-aggressive but have developed a rhythmic pulsing motion — part bluff, part balance mechanism — which mimics a rattling pattern when disturbed. This motion, combined with its earthy coloring, has made it a notable component of the local ecosystem and folklore, often seen as a sign that the forest is “watching.”

Physique and Appearance

  • Size: 18–22 cm in length
  • Weight: 0.3–0.5 kg
  • Body: Segmented, soft exoskin covered in bristle-like hairs
  • Coloration: Dull brown with rust-red patches, mossy green striations along the back
  • Speed: 0.6 km/h (crawling), unable to swim

Special Features:

  • Vibration Organs: Specialized abdominal muscles generate low-frequency tremors
  • Rhythmic Motion: Capable of producing a rattling effect by swaying in a patterned rhythm
  • Bristled Sensory Hairs: Detect air pressure and ground vibrations from several meters away

Game Mechanics

  • Armor Class (AC): 10
  • Hit Points (HP): 5
  • Speed: 10 ft.

Attacks

  • None (Passive Creature)

Special Abilities

  • Rattleback Defense: When threatened, emits a ground tremor in a 10-ft. radius; creatures must succeed on a DC 11 Insight check to recognize it as harmless
  • Early Warning System: If within 30 ft. of allied creatures, grants +2 to initiative rolls when it detects incoming threats
  • Natural Seismograph: Detects movement of medium or larger creatures within 60 ft., even through foliage or brush

Behavior

  • Diet: Fungal spores, decaying plant matter, and small insects
  • Social Structure: Mostly solitary; loosely gregarious during the moist-season bloom
  • Activity Pattern: Diurnal, most active during periods of wind stillness or pre-storm humidity

Survival Strategies:

  • False Threat Display: Rhythmic body pulses simulate a larger or more dangerous creature
  • Silent Retreat: Slides under bark layers or into soft underbrush when disturbed
  • Scent Cloak: Emits a mild moss-like odor to blend with surrounding foliage

Reproduction and Lifecycle

  • Breeding Trigger: Initiated by sustained humidity and soil temperature rising above 28°C
  • Egg Cluster Size: 200–300 eggs
  • Nesting Sites: Moist detritus beds under layered bark
  • Hatching Time: 4–6 days
  • Lifespan: 3–5 years (Estimation)

Tactical Advice for Dungeon Masters

Rattleback Crawlers can subtly enrich the game environment or be used as natural alarm systems:

  • Living Alarm: Their vibration sense allows them to detect approaching enemies, giving perceptive players an edge
  • Non-Combat Encounter: Ideal for moments of tension or immersion in nature-focused missions
  • Rare Harvest Material: Vibration organs are sometimes used by Exohuman engineers to craft primitive seismic detectors or motion traps
