THE MANLA

Overview

The Manla is a swift, deer-like mammal native to the Atrana Mountains in the Asari Region of the Eastern Equatorial Section of the Habitual Belt on VOI 700 D.

Thriving in herds along the lower slopes and valleys, these agile herbivores graze on the region’s hardy vegetation. Their unique adaptations, including four ears and four eyes, grant them exceptional awareness, making them elusive prey for predators like the Arr Birds or Moar.

During the Beta Age, excessive Exohuman hunting caused a severe decline in their population. However, the Peace Treaty of the Gamma Age introduced strict hunting bans, allowing the Manla population to slowly recover. Today, they remain under active conservation efforts, representing a symbol of ecological resilience in the Atrana Mountains.

Physique and Appearance

  • Shoulder Height: 0.8 - 1.0 meters
  • Body Length: 1.4 - 1.7 meters
  • Weight: 25 - 30 kg
  • Fur Colors: Dark shades to blend with the mountainous terrain
  • Speed: Sprint: Up to 80 km/h | Long Distance: Sustains speeds of up to 50 km/h

Special Features:

  • Four Ears: Provides heightened hearing in all directions.
  • Four Eyes: Enhances depth perception and 360° situational awareness.
  • Sure-Footedness: Designed for rugged, mountainous terrain, allowing swift and stable movement.

Game Mechanics

  • Armor Class (AC): 12
  • Hit Points (HP): 40
  • Speed: 80 ft. (sprinting) | 50 ft. (long-distance running)

Attacks:

  • Hoof Kick: +4 to hit, 1d6+2 bludgeoning damage. Can knock smaller creatures prone.
  • Escape Dash: As a reaction, the Manla can double its movement speed for one turn when fleeing threats.

Special Abilities:

  • Enhanced Perception: Advantage on Perception checks related to sight and sound due to four eyes and four ears.
  • Herd Instinct: If within 10 feet of at least two other Manlas, gains +2 AC due to coordinated movement.
  • Rapid Evasion: When rolling a Dexterity save to avoid an area effect, the Manla takes half damage on a fail and no damage on a success.

Behavior

  • Diet: Herbivorous (grasses, shrubs, and frost-resistant vegetation).
  • Social Structure: Herd-based, with 15-50 individuals per group.

Survival Strategies:

  • Herd Vigilance: One or more Manlas keep watch while others graze, alerting the herd with high-pitched calls if danger is spotted.
  • Escape as Defense: Rather than fighting, Manlas rely on speed, evading most predators rather than confronting them.
  • Group Fleeing Pattern: When escaping, the herd splits into multiple unpredictable directions, making it harder for predators to single out a target.

Reproduction and Lifecycle

Manlas have a structured herd hierarchy, typically led by an experienced female. Mating occurs annually, with males competing through agility and endurance rather than direct combat.

Reproductive Traits:

  • Mating Season: Occurs once per year, timed with peak vegetation availability.
  • Gestation Period: 8 months, after which a single calf is born.
  • Calf Development: Newborns remain hidden in valleys and caves for several weeks before joining the herd.

Lifespan and Mating Behavior:

  • Total Lifespan: 20-30 years (Estimation)
  • Mating Rituals: Males engage in speed-based displays, with dominant runners earning mating privileges.
  • Herd Protection: The herd collectively raises young, forming defensive formations around them when threatened.

Tactical Advice for Dungeon Masters

The Manla is not a combat creature, but its speed and awareness can create dynamic encounters involving stealth, pursuit, and survival elements.

  • Chase Sequences: Players attempting to hunt or capture a Manla in the Beta Age must outmaneuver it in rugged terrain, requiring skill checks in Dexterity (Acrobatics) or Animal Handling.
  • Stealth Challenges: Due to their high perception, sneaking up on a herd requires careful approach and environmental advantages.
  • Predator Interactions: The presence of Manlas may attract larger predators, introducing a secondary threat in exploration-based scenarios.
  • Illegal Poaching Conflict: Players may encounter poachers violating the hunting ban in the Gamma Age, creating morally complex decisions about law enforcement and survival ethics.
