LAVA CRABS
Overview
Lava Crabs are armored, extremophile invertebrates native to the geothermal zones of Ralar Bay on the Dark Side of VOI 700 D. These hardy scavengers dwell in steam fissures and along the edges of lava flows, perfectly adapted to survive intense heat, pressure changes, and volatile terrain.
They play a vital ecological role in recycling organic material and providing sustenance for predators like the Glowfin Ray. Their thick shells and aggressive defense behavior make them both resilient and dangerous when provoked.
Physique and Appearance
- Size: Up to 60 cm across shell width
- Weight: 8-10 kg
- Exoskeleton: Layered volcanic-carbon shell with heat-resistant properties
- Limbs: Six jointed legs with gripping claws, plus two frontal pincers
- Coloration: Dark gray with glowing red joints due to internal thermal circulation
Special Features:
- Able to survive in temperatures exceeding 100°C
- Uses chemosensory antennae to locate nutrients in volcanic runoff
- Emits bursts of steam when threatened, creating a smokescreen for retreat
Game Mechanics
- Armor Class (AC): 16 (reinforced exoskeleton)
- Hit Points (HP): 30
- Speed: 20 ft. (land), 30 ft. (climbing), 10 ft. (swimming)
Attacks
- Claw Pinch: +5 to hit, 1d8+2 bludgeoning damage
- Steam Burst (Recharge 5–6): All creatures in a 10 ft. radius must succeed on a DC 13 Constitution save or be blinded until the end of their next turn
Special Abilities
- Molten Skin: Resistant to fire damage
- Volcanic Grip: Gains advantage on climbing checks on volcanic or rocky surfaces
Behavior
- Diet: Scavenger; feeds on decaying organic matter and extremophile algae
- Social Structure: Semi-solitary, often found in loose colonies around stable vents
- Activity Pattern: Most active during lava surges and post-eruption phases
Survival Strategies:
- Retreats into steam fissures to avoid predators
- Emits steam clouds to confuse attackers or mask scent from heat-trackers
Reproduction and Lifecycle
Reproductive Traits:
- Mating Season: Linked to geothermal cycles
- Egg Laying: Females deposit clusters of heat-resistant eggs near stable fissures
- Incubation Time: 12-15 days, dependent on ambient vent heat
Lifespan and Growth:
- Total Lifespan: 12-15 years (Estimation)
- Juvenile Phase: Young crabs molt rapidly in first year, growing to full size by year three
Tactical Advice for Dungeon Masters
Lava Crabs offer tactical variety in volcanic or geothermal encounters, especially in environments where terrain shifts rapidly.
- Swarm Hazard: Crabs defending a geothermal site may swarm invaders, using terrain and steam to their advantage
- Harvest Opportunity: Shell fragments and internal glands are valuable components for crafting heat-resistant gear or medicines
