2 | Read-Aloud Descriptions
Initial Read-Aloud (Scene Opening)
The Morningstar Food Market lives under a low blanket of mist.
Six compact stalls ring a stone hearth where coals glow dull orange beneath stretched tarp sails. Timber walkways radiate outward, lifted just high enough to keep boots out of the mire. Lanterns sway gently as vendors call out prices — flatbreads, smoked crab, fresh greens — their voices steady and practiced.
The air is thick with toasted grain, woodsmoke, damp leather, and herbs. Settlers move with purpose. Buy. Trade. Leave. No one lingers without a reason.
This is a place to stock up, blend in — or watch without being noticed.
Staged Read-Alouds (Progressive Descriptions)
| Trigger / Timing | Read-Aloud / Narrative Insert |
| Errand runner arrives and conducts trade | A saddled Veyra pushes through the mist and is tied off near Django’s Diner. Its rider dismounts without hurry — heavy boots, cargo trousers, a weathered yellow rain coat. An old Earth–style cowboy hat, reinforced with fur, sits low on his head. When he turns slightly, a slash-shaped Mark of Shame is visible beneath his right eye. A holstered gun rests openly at his belt. A few vendors pause for a moment — then resume their work. The man does not browse. He moves with intent. He stops at a stand where stacks of helik oat flatbreads are laid out in neat rows — plain, seeded, spiced — beside a hand-cranked grinder chewing through Rizon barley. Behind the counter stands a grey-haired man with tired eyes, wrapped in a black coat. The rider pulls a pencil and a small, worn sheet of paper from his pocket. You recognize the stiff paper instantly — the Hale & Hook logo is unmistakable. He slides the sheet and the pen across the counter. The vendor glances at it, nods once, adds a short note of his own, then begins stacking flatbreads with practiced care. As he works, the rider reaches into his shoulder bag and produces a pair of fur-enforced shoes, setting them on the counter without a word. No haggling. No receipts. Just quiet agreement — ink, fur, and trust. |
| Errand runner finishes and leaves | With his shoulder bag visibly heavier, the man steps away from the counter without a word. He crosses the plaza at an unhurried pace, boots thudding softly on the timber planks. At the hitching post, he swings up onto his Veyra in one smooth motion. The animal snorts, then turns toward Maingate at the southern edge of town. Hooves splash quietly through the mud as rider and mount move off. Within moments, both are swallowed by the mist beyond the market. The low murmur of trade resumes. Someone laughs. A grinder cranks again. Morningstar carries on, as if nothing out of the ordinary just happened. |

5 | Triggers, Clues & Consequences
Phase 1 — Normal Market Activity
| Trigger / Cue (Player Action) | Immediate Reaction | Clue / Consequence |
| 🕵️ PCs are Wanted and Undisguised (The Ticking Clock) | If the Morningstar Food Market is the PCs' “1 Location Visit” before the town lockdown, time runs out while they are at the market. A trader gives the PCs a hard, knowing stare. | The Clock Expires: Guarding Troopers enter the market. The crowd goes quiet. The Troopers approach the PCs: “By order of the Station Commander, you are under arrest. Step away from the bar.” |
| 🚨 Guarding Troopers attempt to arrest the PCs | The PCs must choose: surrender peacefully or resist. Orin grips his axe handle, watching closely. | If PCs submit: They are disarmed and marched out without anyone interfering. Proceed directly to Scene 4f — Local Guarding Troopers Station. If PCs resist, attack, or flee: Traders immediately turn hostile, aiding the Troopers to protect their market standing. The town siren wails. Proceed immediately to Scene 4g — Escaping Morningstar. |
| 🛒 PCs buy supplies or browse stalls | Vendors are polite, practiced, and efficient. | Establishes baseline normality. All available goods, services, and assigned prices are listed on the official Morningstar Food Market wiki page. No investigative clues yet. |
| 👀 PCs observe quietly | No one reacts. | Allows PCs to notice patterns, hierarchy, repetition, and who draws subtle respect — without drawing attention themselves. |

Phase 2 — The Errand Runner
| Trigger / Cue (Player Action) | Immediate Reaction | Clue / Consequence |
| 👁️ PCs observe the errand runner discreetly | The errand runner does not react. His movements stay calm and deliberate. | Requires a PER or INS-based probe (DC 12). Success: PCs clearly notice: no Kourou exchanged, use of Hale & Hook–branded notes, barter via furs, and the respectful behavior of vendors. Failure: PCs notice the trade, but miss one or more key details (DM choice). |
| 🧠 PCs did prior research (Hale & Hook) | Recognition clicks. | Confirms this is J.W.’s errand runner. |
| 🧩 PCs lack prior knowledge | Details feel “off.” | PCs may deduce importance through behavior and trade mechanics. |
| 🚶 PCs follow the errand runner | The errand runner becomes subtly alert — posture tightens, pace shifts slightly. | Requires a DEX or CHA-based probe (DC 13). Success: The runner allows continued observation, mentally cataloging the PCs without reacting. Failure: The runner notices surveillance; future attempts to follow him face increased difficulty, and he begins preparing countermeasures. |

Phase 3 — Decision Point
| Trigger / Cue (Player Action) | Immediate Reaction | Clue / Consequence |
| 🐾 PCs follow the errand runner as he leaves the market | The errand runner mounts his Veyra and rides south toward Maingate, disappearing into mist and mud beyond the Public Services Ring. | Unlocks Scene 5 - Follow the Errand Runner. PCs must decide immediately how to pursue (mount, distance, terrain, timing). Delays, hesitation, or poor positioning increase the risk of losing the trail or walking into a prepared counter-move. |
| ⏳ PCs hesitate or delay | Runner disappears into the fog. | Opportunity is lost for now. |
The scene ends the moment the PCs leave the market boundary.
6 | DM Notes
- This is a watching scene: Do not rush it. Let routine reveal power.
- The errand runner is never dramatic: His influence is shown through how others behave around him.
- Public space protects him: The market neutralizes conflict. Violence, threats, or overt pressure do not advance the plot here — they only collapse options and attract consequences.
- Recognition is player-driven: Probes clarify details, not conclusions. If the table understands who the errand runner is, the fiction follows — no roll required.
- Once the PCs follow, Morningstar is over: The moment the PCs commit to following the errand runner, Scene 4c ends and Scene 5 - Follow the Errand Runner begins. End all market affordances immediately — no retroactive purchases, no last questions.
- Best possible scene outcome: By the end of this scene, the PCs understand that J.W. exerts power through routine, not presence — and that choosing to follow his errand runner is a point of no return from public space into active pursuit.
- If the Ticking Clock Expires Here: If wanted PCs linger at the market, the Guarding Troopers will track them down. The traders will not protect the PCs from the law. If a fight breaks out during an arrest attempt, they will actively help the Troopers subdue or eject the PCs to prevent the market from being damaged or shut down.
