FEDERAL NEWS LOUNGES (FNL)
For resource-efficency, the federal newspaper Weekly Gazette isn't distributed to individuals. Instead it is delivered to and read in Federal Libraries, in Federal Hostels and Saloons and in designated reading lounges called Federal News Lounges (FNL). FNLs are small pavilions providing current and back issues, a big table and generally around 20 seats. They are mostly situated in parks, town squares or other places accessible to the general public.
Architecture and interior
The Federal News Lounges (FNLs) are unique architectural marvels that epitomize the combination of functionality, communal spirit, and sustainability. Covering a ground area of approximately 40 square meters, these small pavilions serve as public domains where citizens congregate to access the Weekly Gazette and other federal publications.
Exterior Architecture
Built using Mycelium construction methods, the exterior walls of FNLs exhibit an organic, almost earthen texture that blends seamlessly into natural settings like parks. Mycelium, the root system of fungi, is a resource-efficient building material that is not only lightweight but also has excellent insulating properties. The lounge's walls taper elegantly towards a rounded, almost dome-like roof, mimicking the organic forms found in nature. This curved roof is punctuated by skylights, which let in natural light, reducing the need for artificial lighting during the day. The entrance is marked by a subtle archway, over which the emblem of the Federal News Lounge is tastefully etched.
Interior Design
Stepping inside, visitors are greeted by an inviting and cozy atmosphere. The walls are left in their natural mycelium texture, providing a warm, earthy backdrop. Around a large, central wooden table are arranged approximately 20 chairs, offering a communal space for reading and discussion. The table incorporates built-in slots that hold copies of the current and back issues of the Weekly Gazette. Overhead, the skylights bathe the space in a pleasant luminosity.
Amenities
The FNL is designed for accessibility and inclusivity. Apart from wheelchair-friendly table heights, the lounges also feature tactile floor markers to assist visually impaired visitors. The layout of the furniture is designed to allow for easy movement, making it welcoming for people of all ages and abilities. There are no barriers or gates at the entrance, reinforcing the idea that information is a public good, free and accessible to all.
