ESRA FUNKENBERG

Race and Faction

  • Species: Exohuman
  • Born: 2569 on the spaceship Last Frontier | Deceased: September 2629
  • Affiliation (Beta Age): Independent Entrepreneur
  • Place of Residence: Arla Town

Background

Esra Funkenberg was born in 2569 aboard the Last Frontier spaceship. Raised solely by her mother, Esra’s childhood was shaped by her parents' early divorce. Her mother underwent a gender transformation shortly after Esra’s birth, choosing to live as a heterosexual man — a decision that caused Esra’s father, a Guarding Trooper, to break off all contact.

Esra pursued Nutritional Science at the Last Frontier University, later working as a Nutritional Designer. After the crash-landing of the Last Frontier, she relocated to Arla Town in the Asari Region and founded the Funkenberg Fish Factory, a central fish processing facility.

Esra was known for her brash and colorful personality. She never married, preferring a life of risk and indulgence. A passionate gambler, she lost large sums of her income at the Firetown Entertainment District and was notorious for challenging her own employees to rounds of Frostpunkt dice in Arla Town’s local tavern, the Poseidon Inn. This led to the unique scenario where she owed debts to several of her own workers. To offset her mounting gambling losses, Esra dramatically ramped up fish production at the factory — an aggressive business decision that caused escalating tensions with the Trando Tribe, whose sacred relationship with Lake Arla was threatened by the overfishing.

Esra served as the honorary mayor of Arla Town from its founding in 2626 until its destruction in 2629. Her role combined informal leadership with practical management, making her a central figure in the short-lived community.

Esra Funkenberg died in late 2629 during the Great War, when the Trando Tribe launched a retaliatory strike that destroyed Arla Town, including the factory she founded.

Motivations and Goals

Esra’s primary goal was to create a profitable operation in the untamed frontier of VOI 700 D. Her ambitions were driven by a need for financial independence and personal legacy. However, her addiction to gambling and her disregard for tribal customs led to mounting tensions and, ultimately, her downfall.

  • In the Alpha Age, Esra was a passionate and capable student and Nutritional Designer. Her ambitions began forming in these early years as she saw the critical role nutrition would play in planetary survival.
  • In the Beta Age, she functions as both a potential ally and liability. Esra might offer the players valuable resources, logistical support, or employment — but may also involve them in conflicts with Native Tribes or gambling-related trouble.

Tactical Advice for Dungeon Masters

Esra Funkenberg offers Dungeon Masters a dynamic NPC for morally gray storytelling. As a flawed but ambitious figure, she fits well into narratives about frontier economics, cultural conflict, and flawed leadership.

  • In the Alpha Age, Esra can be introduced as a fellow student or junior assistant aboard the Last Frontier, helping optimize nutritional rations. She may support the players during supply shortage scenarios or food system failures.
  • In the Beta Age, she is a potential quest giver or social wildcard. She can offer missions related to fish distribution, guarding shipments, or navigating political fallout from overfishing. Her personal debts and overreach may draw the party into larger conflicts.
  • In the Gamma Age, Esra is remembered as a controversial pioneer. Her ruins, data logs, or personal effects can serve as emotional or historical anchors in adventures exploring the failures of early Exohuman colonization. Players may discover traces of her downfall, reflect on the lessons of the past, or become entangled in debates about reclaiming the lake.
