POSEIDON INN ("PI")
Overview
The Poseidon Inn (commonly referred to as “PI”) was a rough-and-tumble shack-style venue located in the heart of Arla Town during the Beta Age. Originally established by Esrah Funkenberg as a morale-boosting saloon for her factory workers, it quickly became known for relentless gambling atmosphere centered around the dice game Frostpunkt.
History and Reputation
Initial Ownership: Esrah Funkenberg opened the PI in late 2626 as a private venue for employees of the Funkenberg Fish Factory.
Space-Drinks Contract (2627): To keep the taps flowing, Esrah signed a “Bar-Desk-as-a-Service” lease with
Space Drinks Inc. The company installed a prefab alloy bar, stocked only its own labels, and stationed a
Butler Bot barkeep nick-named “Corky.” In exchange, PI agreed to sell exclusively
Space Beer and Orbital Spirits — cementing the saloon’s reputation as the lakefront home of Space Drinks.
Gambling Legacy: In a twist of fate, Esra lost the bar during a high-stakes Frostpunkt game to one of her own employees. That employee, in turn, lost it three months later to a fisherman who tragically perished in a storm on Lake Arla.
Space-Drinks Takeover: After the fisherman’s death, Arla townsfolk ceded full stewardship to Space Drinks Inc. The company staffed the shack with two Butler Bots plus a
Cleaning Bot. The revamped venue blended New Kourou’s
Space Market vibe with PI’s smoked-fish snacks and raucous Frostpunkt tables — while profits still cycled back to regular patrons and local families.
Destruction: The PI was burned to the ground during the
Great War in 2629 when the
Trando Tribe razed Arla Town in response to increasing industrial activities and cultural violations.
Architectural Significance
Construction Materials: The building was constructed from salvaged wood and repurposed storage containers.
Floors: Single level
Design: Crude, boxy layout with exposed beams, minimal furnishings, and a perpetual smell of fish and sweat.
Building Structure
Interior and Atmosphere
Drinking Hall: Equipped with wooden booths, shaky tables, and a central Space Drink Inc. alloy bar-desk where Corky dispensed Space Beer and Orbital Spirits on tap.
Snack Counter: Smoked fish strips were sold cheaply and wrapped in recycled paper from factory order forms.
Gambling Tables: Three tables at the back of the room were permanently reserved for Frostpunkt dice games. Betting was loud, unruly, and loosely self-regulated.
Exterior and Courtyard
Outhouse Toilet: The only restroom was a foul-smelling outhouse behind the building.
Courtyard: The space between the inn and the outhouse was often the site of drunken fights, impromptu duels, or semi-formal wrestling matches to resolve gambling disputes.
Management
Although the inn began as a private venture, it was later absorbed by Space Drinks Inc. Service Bots handled all operations, including drink dispensing, booth cleaning, and dispute mediation (usually unsuccessfully).

Public Access, Operating Hours & Operational Rhythm
Public Access: Open to anyone
Opening Hours: 15:00 – 01:00 daily.
Operational Rhythm: Most of the guests arrive after their work shift; last round called at 00:30.
Security Measures
Minimal Oversight: No formal security staff were employed. Disputes were either ignored by the Service Bots or “settled” outside.
Weapon Check: In theory, patrons were asked to leave weapons at the door. In practice, enforcement was nonexistent.
Bot Surveillance: Basic visual logs were maintained by ceiling-mounted service bots but rarely reviewed unless a patron went missing.
Look and Feel
Beta Age — “When the PI Still Breathed”
Step through the warped wooden door and you’re hit by a wall of wood-smoke, and stale Space Beer. Kerosene lamps swing from ceiling hooks, throwing greasy halos across crooked booths scarred with knife-scores and spilled dice. Corky the Butler Bot whirs behind a dull-silver bar desk, metal arms clinking bottles while its voice repeats the day’s discount in cheerful monotone. Fish-skin banners hang from rafters, drying scales glimmering like broken glass. At all hours someone’s rasping out sea shanties while a Frostpunkt cup rattles. Fights flare as fast as they fizzle — settled by a shove into the courtyard mud or a begrudging round of Space Beer on the loser’s tab. The whole shack feels one good wave away from collapse, yet no one inside would rather drink anywhere else.
Gamma Age — “After the Flames”
In the Gamma Age only a charred outline and twisted alloy bar remain. Blackened roof beams jut like ribs against the overcast sky, and wind whistles through gaps where walls once stood. The stink is gone, replaced by damp ash and wild vine that curls around melted tap lines. Frostpunkt dice lie half-buried in soot. At night, scavengers claim the ruins; by day, weather-worn memorial etchings mark the ground where gamblers once roared. Step lightly—every creak echoes the last brawl, and travelers insist that when the lake fog rolls in you can still hear dice clatter and a Butler Bot’s static-cracked greeting: “Welcome to the PI—first round’s on the lake.”
Influence and Local Role
Though not officially recognized, the Poseidon Inn was the heartbeat of Arla Town. It served as a communal gathering space, a gambling den, and an unofficial arena of local justice. Disputes, romances, and worker negotiations often played out within its fish-stained walls.
Tactical Advice for Dungeon Masters
The Poseidon Inn offers a rich, gritty setting for Beta Age adventures.
Conflict Potential: Its lawless nature makes it ideal for social tension, backroom deals, and explosive conflict.
Hooks and Leads: Players might find clues here about fish smuggling rings, lost workers, or tensions with the Trando Tribe.
Atmosphere: Use dim lighting, the scent of smoked fish, and loud dice games to build immersion. The PI should feel like a barely-contained storm of frustration, ambition, and escapism.
