CAVERN PERCH

The Cavern Perch is a large, deep-dwelling freshwater predator endemic to the underwater cave networks of Lake Orlanda in the Asari Region of the Habitual Belt on VOI 700 D. It is adapted to the pitch-dark conditions of submerged rock systems and rarely ventures into open water. Feared by local fishers and respected by the Orlanda Tribe, the Cavern Perch is known for its patience, ambush tactics, and massive bite.

The Orlanda refer to it as “Mur'Thaal”, meaning “Watcher in the Stone,” and believe it to be the guardian of hidden truths in the lake's depths.

• Size: 1.2–1.5 meters
• Weight: 45–55 kg
• Body Shape: Elongated and muscled, with a flat head and upturned jaw
• Skin: Pale gray with translucent fins; some specimens exhibit faint bioluminescent markings along their spine
• Speed: 2.0 km/h (with rapid burst capability of up to 5 km/h)

• Sensory Ridges: Along the flanks to detect vibrations in cave water
• Jaw Lock: Once it bites, the perch can lock its jaw to prevent prey escape
• Bioluminescent Lure: A subtle dorsal glow attracts smaller cave fauna

• Armor Class (AC): 15 (thick skin and hardened scales)
• Hit Points (HP): 42
• Speed: 25 ft. (swimming)

• Cave Maw Bite: 2d10 piercing damage. On a hit, the target must make a DC 14 Strength saving throw or be grappled.
• Tail Slam: 1d8 bludgeoning damage to all targets within 5 ft. when retreating into a cave tunnel

• Darkvision Sense: Can detect movement and shapes in complete darkness within 60 ft.
• Territorial Ambush: Gains advantage on attack rolls when fighting inside confined environments
• Pressure Adaptation: Immune to water pressure effects below 300 meters depth

• Diet: Carnivorous (feeds on fish, crabs, and sometimes small diving creatures)
• Social Structure: Solitary
• Activity Pattern: Fully nocturnal; peak activity when surface life is quiet

• Deep Nesting: Dwells in submerged ledges and narrow cave mouths
• Stillness Hunting: Remains motionless for hours until prey swims close

• Spawning Conditions: Triggered by deep-water temperature shifts and increased nutrient flow
• Egg Chambers: Females lay 20–30 large adhesive eggs in protected rock alcoves
• Parental Behavior: Males guard the nests for up to two months
• Lifespan: 20–25 years (Estimation)

Use the Cavern Perch as a dramatic encounter for underwater expeditions or lake-based quests:

• Cave Guardian Encounter: A perch might guard a sunken relic or natural tunnel system the players must traverse
• Orlanda Rite of Passage: A young Orlanda character might be sent to confront the Mur'Thaal as a tribal trial
• Surprise Threat: Attack from beneath when characters are searching wreckage or setting up underwater gear
