The Lumilight Lantern is a sustainable, bioluminescent lighting device used predominantly along the Extended Trade Route on the Dark Side of the planet VOI 700 D. Developed in 2636 under the aegis of Georgia Hawking's government, it represents a response to the need to conserve energy and use limited resources efficiently.

The Lumilight lantern will burn continuously for about 3-4 weeks before nutrients and saline need to be replenished.

A Lumilight lantern consists of the following components:

• Bioluminescent organisms: The main component of the Lumilight lantern is the bioluminescent fungus Luminofera dualis, also known as “Shika Me La”. The fungus emits light as a result of chemical reactions that take place in its cells, mostly by the molecule luciferin in the presence of oxygen and the enzyme luciferase.

• Energy supply: The bioluminescent cells of Luminofera dualis require nutrients and oxygen to produce light. These are provided by a special “biochemical battery” integrated into the lantern. The battery contains nutrient and oxygen supplies that are continuously delivered to the bioluminescent cells. The energy supply is designed to be “recharged” by adding new nutrients and saline solution to ensure a constant supply of moisture and keep the water liquid, even in the cold temperatures on the Dark Side.

• Housing and Optics: The Lumilight lantern is made of a tough but lightweight housing material that protects the bioluminescent cells and power supply and directs the light in the desired direction. It is equipped with a lens that focuses the emitted light and focuses the light beam.

• Control mechanism: a simple mechanism for switching the Lumilight lantern on and off is also integrated. When “On”, the supply of nutrients and oxygen to the bioluminescent cells is activated, which triggers the light emission. When “Off”, the supply is cut off, which stops the light emission. However, since the lanterns along the trade routes on the Dark Side are intended to burn continuously, the off switch is rarely in use.
