EXOHUMAN HOLIDAYS IN THE GAMMA AGE

Overview

In the Gamma Age, the citizens of the Federal Confederation observe a strictly regulated work-life balance, with only three officially recognized holidays. This limited number of holidays is a direct result of the planned economy, where every hour of labor contributes to societal survival under the constraints of resource scarcity and energy conservation.

The Communard Party, which governs the Federal Confederation, tasked the artificial intelligence GAIA with determining the maximum number of holidays the economy could sustain without disrupting productivity and essential services. In 2632, GAIA calculated that the current state of social welfare allowed for three holidays per year, with the potential to introduce two additional holidays in the future as economic conditions improved.

Purpose and Selection of Holidays

Given the diverse cultural backgrounds of ExoHuman settlers, the Communard Party decided against reviving traditional Earth-based holidays. Instead, the government commissioned GAIA to generate a set of ten new holiday concepts, each symbolizing a unique aspect of the new ExoHuman society.

These proposals were then subjected to a public vote, in which citizens selected the three holidays they felt best represented the values of the Federal Confederation. The results led to the establishment of three annual holidays, each commemorating a defining moment in ExoHuman history.

The three holidays

Since the citizens of the Federal Confederation have many different earthly cultural roots, the Communard Party decided to introduce three new holidays. It was important to the Communards that the holidays have no relation to holidays on Earth, but represent entirely new holidays that are symbolic of a new chapter in human history and represent the values of the Federal Confederacy.

The new holidays were generated by the artificial intelligence GAIA - on behalf of the government. The process was such that GAIA created ten holidays, which were then put to a vote among the population to determine the most popular three proposals.

The choice of the citizens led to the introduction of the following holidays:

  • Day of Hope (1st of January): The Day of Hope reminds of the launch of the multigenerational spaceship Last Frontier from the EASA-spaceport Kourou into space at January 1, 2421.As a sign of hope to put down new roots on a new planet, people give each other cuttings of their plants.
  • Day of Universal Harmony (16th of April): On the Day of Universal Harmony, the human community celebrates the signing of the Peace Treaty on april 16 in the year 2631. To celebrate peace between the ExoHumans and the Natives, an annual street parade is held in New Kourou, with representatives from the big six Native tribes in attendance.
  • Day of Family (14th of October): This holiday serves to unite families. It is usually spent in the circle of family and relatives. The focus is on eating, drinking and communicating together. In order to be able to celebrate the holiday together with the family, travel activities between the reservations are expressly permitted on this occasion.
