THE ZAPOR
The Zapor is a formidable bird of prey and scavenger, native to the Dark Side of VOI 700 D. With no eyesight, the Zapor relies on ultrasonic sounds and a sharp sense of smell to hunt and navigate. Equipped with a razor-sharp beak and capable of diving at speeds up to 250 km/h, the Zapor is both a fearsome hunter and a skilled scavenger. Zapors live in large colonies within the warmer microclimate caves of the Atrana Mountains, taking advantage of safety in numbers.

Reproduction and Lifecycle
Zapors are monogamous, forming long-term partnerships. Males perform elaborate flight displays, showcasing acrobatics and vocal calls to attract a mate. Mating takes place near the nest site, after which both partners work together to build a large nest within the colony. The female lays one or more eggs, and both parents take turns incubating and protecting the nest.
After the eggs hatch, both parents feed their young with predigested food. The colony structure allows for cooperative protection, with nearby Zapors helping defend nests from potential threats. Zapors reach maturity in a few years and have a life expectancy of 30-40 years.
Behavior and Social Structure
- Colony Life: Zapors nest in colonies within the Atrana Mountain caves, benefiting from mutual protection and increased foraging success.
- Hunting Patterns: Though social within colonies, Zapors hunt alone, often traveling far in search of carrion. When food is found, their calls may attract other Zapors to the site, initiating a communal feeding.
- Communication: Zapors use specific calls to signal each other, particularly for colony defense or when scavenging.
Abilities and Adaptions
- High-Speed Diving: With powerful wings and aerodynamic structure, the Zapor can dive at high speeds, making it a swift and precise predator.
- Sharp Beak: The Zapor’s beak is versatile, used for hunting, nest building, and defense.
- Social Intelligence: Their colony-based lifestyle allows Zapors to respond rapidly to signals, aiding in defense and group coordination.
Taming and Bonding with Zapors
While uncommon, some skilled Natives have successfully tamed Zapors, often raising them from chicks. Taming requires careful bonding and regular interaction, as Zapors respond best to a familiar handler within a structured social group.
Tactical Advice for Dungeon Masters
Zapors are formidable aerial opponents, best used in surprise attacks. Their high-speed dives and stealth make them excellent for ambushing players, while their colony's defense mechanism can escalate encounters if a player attacks one within proximity of others. Use their agility and perception advantages to create challenging and dynamic encounters.
