2 | Read-Aloud Descriptions
Initial Read-Aloud (Scene Opening)
The first-floor hallway of Saloon Gloria is warm and dim, lit only by two oil lamps and the soft shimmer of bioluminescent Lumira-wood. The geothermal pipes beneath the floor give off a gentle, steady hum. As you settle into your space for the night — bed, blanket, or sleeping bag — the noise of the saloon below fades into a low, comforting murmur.
Then a soft thump echoes through the thin wall.
Another.
A muffled gasp follows… then the unmistakable rhythm of rough, breathless intimacy. The wall beside you trembles lightly with each movement. The sounds grow sharper, more uneven — until a sudden, violent crash cuts through them.
A woman cries out in pain. A man snarls something in panic. Then silence.
Heavy breathing. Footsteps. A hushed, frantic whisper: “Get up… come on… don’t do this…”
Something drags across the floorboards in the next room. Whatever happened in there… it wasn’t part of the fun anymore.
Staged Read-Alouds (Progressive Descriptions)
| Trigger / Timing | Read-Aloud Cue |
| PCs remain silent and listen | The room next door goes still — no movement, no breath, just a heavy, terrible quiet. Then a faint crack-crack of shortwave static breaks through the silence. A Weber comes online. A man speaks in a low, urgent whisper: “…yeah… it happened… at Gloria. Need assistance. We gotta clean something up.” |
| PCs peek through the door gap or keyhole | You glimpse a frantic man in a half-open Trooper uniform shirt, hands shaking, staring at a woman lying motionless on the floor. His knuckles are bloody. In one hand, he hold the Guarding Trooper Edition of a Weber Shortwave Communication Device … |
3 | Scene Intent
| Scene Type | Player Intents | DM Function / Story Link |
| Social · Discovery · Blackmail Opportunity | Rest · observe · investigate · gain leverage | Reveal Station Commander Jace Laux’s crime; give PCs a decisive tool for Scene 9 infiltration. |
4 | Key (N)PCs + Dynamic Cues
| Name | Role / Affiliation | Motivation / Goal | Dynamic Cues — How They React in Play | Wiki Link |
| Jace Laux | Station Commander · Guarding Troopers | Hide the killing · Avoid scandal or arrest | Nervous, panicked. If PCs reveal they know: immediately tries to negotiate secrecy → perfect blackmail target. | — |
| Unidentified Prostitute (probably Tamsin Lien) | Female Sex worker | — | Already dead; victim of Jace Laux. | — |
5 | Triggers, Clues & Consequences
| Trigger / Cue | Immediate Reaction / What Happens | Future Hook / Consequence |
| 👂 PCs remain silent and listen | They hear: violent struggle → panic → accidental killing → frantic Weber call (“…at Gloria… need assistance… keep it quiet…”). | Full verbal blackmail material. |
| 🔎 PCs peek through the door gap | They see Laux in partial Trooper uniform, bloody knuckles, standing over the dead woman; his badge (“J. Laux — SC”) slips into view. | Visual confirmation → strong leverage in Scene 9. |
| 🚶 PCs approach Laux at the crime scene | Laux freezes mid-motion, eyes wide. “This is not what it looked like — she tried to blackmail me… I just… damn it…” He trembles, torn between fear and anger. | PCs may negotiate immediately |
| 🤝 PCs decide to negotiate immediately | Laux keeps his hands visible, breathing hard. He desperately fears exposure and listens to every word the PCs say. | • Promise silence → Laux “owes a favor.”• Demand release of the Nameless Man → he refuses at first (“He’s a Free State case — all eyes on me.”).• INTIMIDATION DC 12 → he breaks and offers a workaround: “I can mark him sick. Transfer him to the Medical Station. Easier for you to… handle things there.” |
| 🚪 PCs wait until he leaves | After a short while, heavy boots in the corridor, low Trooper voices and the sounds of a rough, practised cleanup — fabric tearing, something being dragged, muffled curses — and finally the stairway creaking as both men leave Gloria’s first floor. Then silence. | Safe window to investigate the scene without Trooper presence. |
| 🔎 PCs search the room after | They find a torn clutch under the bed. Inside: 200 Kourou, folding knife, pocket calendar with the sex workers name on it (Tamsin Lien) six months of entries marked “J.Laux.” and today’s meeting, which is also the last appointment of the day. The room still carries a faint chemical smell, as if something had been hastily cleaned or dissolved. | Physical evidence → decisive leverage |
| 👣 PCs choose to follow Laux | They hear him and the other Trooper exit into the Public Services Ring, still shaken but no body or bag with them | Optional tail route leading toward the Guarding Trooper Station. |
6 | DM Notes
- Purpose of the Scene:
Give the PCs a decisive advantage for infiltrating the Trooper Station by witnessing Jace Laux commit accidental manslaughter and cover it up. This leverage bypasses several challenges in Scene 9.
- What the PCs Can Learn / Confirm:
- Laux killed a sex worker during rough intercourse.
- He panicked and called another Trooper for a covert cleanup.
- He tried to hide all traces.
- His identity is confirmed by badge, uniform shirt, and his Weber device call.
- Physical evidence (clutch, calendar, money, knife, chemical smell) proves this was an ongoing relationship — not a random encounter.
- What Makes the Evidence Powerful:
- Verbal confession (over Weber).
- Visual confirmation (PCs see him).
- Physical evidence that can’t be explained away.
- Pattern of meetings (calendar entries) proving long-term involvement.
- Chemical smell implying a deliberate, hidden body disposal.
- How to Play Jace Laux:
- Panicked, ashamed, terrified of exposure.
- Aggressively defensive at first (“She tried to blackmail me!”).
- Quickly becomes submissive once he understands the PCs can destroy him.
- More afraid of the Cartel than of internal investigation — use this in dialogue.
- Negotiation Dynamics (GM Mindset): PCs have total upper hand. Laux is desperate and wants one thing: “Make this go away.”
- What the Leverage Can Get the PCs:
- Access to restricted hallways.
- A forged “medical transfer” request.
- A temporary blind spot in surveillance or patrol.
- Laux personally escorting them to Cell 1 (rare but possible).
- Removal of the guard posted near the Nameless Man.
- Reduced hostility from Troopers (“Laux said you’re cleared.”).
- Tone to Maintain:
- Quiet, claustrophobic tension.
- Morally grey — nobody is heroic here.
- The PCs feel the weight of what they witnessed.
- Firetown’s darkness feels *very real* behind the saloon’s warm facade.
- If PCs escalate poorly:
- Laux may attack in blind panic.
- Backup Troopers may return sooner than expected.
- Laux may try to turn the accusation around (“They killed her!”).
- The cleanup Trooper might notice unfamiliar voices and suspect witnesses.
- If PCs walk away without investigating:
- They will still hear the Weber call and cleanup.
- But they miss the physical evidence → blackmail becomes weaker.
- Laux in Scene 9 is nervous but not panicked; DCs for intimidation rise.
