- Type: Travel · Survival · Optional Encounters · Time Pressure
- Era: Beta Age
- Tone: Endless dark · biting cold · long miles of silence · the weight of the deadline

2 | Read-Aloud Descriptions
Initial Read-Aloud (Scene Opening)
The lights of Firetown fade behind you until they’re nothing but a faint, trembling glow against the dark. Ahead lies the Ralar Region — a frozen world of wind-scoured plains, distant vents, and black ice stretching farther than your eyes can follow.
Without the wall’s torches, the dark feels heavier. The cold bites sharper. Each crunch of snow under your boots echoes into empty space, swallowed by the vastness around you.
If your party carries the Nameless Man, his fragile breathing crackles in the air like brittle cloth. Every sound seems too loud. Every shadow feels like a watcher. And above it all, the mission clock is still ticking — seven days from the briefing, no exceptions.
Somewhere across this frozen expanse lies New Kourou… and the OfSO Headquarters.
Staged Read-Alouds (Progressive Descriptions)
| Trigger / Timing | Read-Aloud Cue |
| Crossing deeper into the plains | The ground beneath you shifts from compressed snow to fractured ice. Long cracks spider outward under your feet, humming faintly as the temperature drops another few degrees. |
| Approaching the geothermal vents near Ralar | Heat rises in shimmering waves from the fissures. Strange blooming frost shapes curl around the vents — living ice organisms retreating from your steps. |
| Passing the eastern slopes of the Atrana Mountains | Black rock walls rise like jagged sentinels on your right. Gusts roll down their faces, carrying grit sharp enough to sting exposed skin. |
| Near the Dark Sea coast (optional detour) | The air turns heavy, damp. Somewhere in the dark, you hear water — liquid water — lapping against ice. A rare sound on the Dark Side. |
3 | Scene Intent
| Scene Type | Player Intents | DM Function / Story Link |
| Travel · Survival · Time-Sensitive Return | Cross the Ralar Region · reach New Kourou before the 7-day deadline · protect (or hide) the Nameless Man · avoid or confront dangers | Provide closure to the wilderness arc; allow final ambushes or moral choices; set up the political twist and confrontation in Scene 12. |
4 | Key (N)PCs + Dynamic Cues
| Name | Role / Affiliation | Motivation / Goal | Dynamic Cues — How They React in Play | Wiki Link |
| Nameless Man (if present) | Frail escapee | Survive · cling to PCs | Becomes weaker in deep cold; panics in open spaces; needs warmth and reassurance; sedation reduces panic but slows movement. | — |
| Outlaw Scouts (Optional Encounter) | Criminals of the Ralar Region | Profit · capture or ransom targets | Appear as silhouettes cresting ridges; cautious until they see a vulnerable target; extremely motivated if Nameless Man is spotted. | Outlaws |
| Zark (Optional Encounter) | Native predator | Territory defense | Silent ambushers; strike from dark rock or vents; retreat if injured. | Zark |
| Federal Courier Caravan (Optional Ally) | Free State Personnel | Stay on schedule | Neutral toward PCs; may offer escort or information if approached carefully; suspicious of unregistered passengers. | Federal Courier Service |
| Weather Hazards | — | Freeze · disorient | Black ice storms, shifting frost sheets, magnetic pulses near Vazhak border; can separate the party. | — |
5 | Triggers, Clues & Consequences
A. Traversing the Ralar Region
| Trigger / Cue | Immediate Reaction / What Happens | Future Hook / Consequence |
| 🥶 Movement without proper winter gear | Numb fingers, slowed steps. | Exhaustion checks every 2 hours; Nameless Man collapses sooner. |
| 🌬️ Sudden cold front | Frost whips across the plains. | Visibility drops; Navigation check DC 13 to stay on track. |
| 🧭 Losing the trail | No landmarks in the dark. | PCs risk drifting toward Vazhak Region (dangerous magnetic storms). |
—
B. Encounters (DM decides weight & difficulty)
1. Outlaw Ambush (high probability if carrying Nameless Man)
| Trigger / Cue | Immediate Reaction | Consequences |
| 👤 Outlaws spot the party | They circle at range. | If the PCs have no weapons → Outlaws seize the Nameless Man. If PCs fight → short skirmish; survivors flee into dark. |
2. Zark Territorial Strike
| Trigger / Cue | Immediate Reaction | Consequences |
| 🐛 Passing geothermal vents | A Zark lashes out with surprising speed. | Wound risk; can retreat into fissure if outnumbered. |
3. Friendly Caravan Encounter
| Trigger / Cue | Immediate Reaction | Consequences |
| 🚚 Approaching a courier convoy | Lantern signals flash in column code. | PCs may hitch a ride if disguised; convoy will not accept the Nameless Man openly. |
—
C. The Deadline (Mandatory Element)
| Trigger / Cue | Immediate Reaction | Future Hook / Consequence |
| ⏳ Time spent traveling | Each day reduces remaining time. | Arrival after the deadline means reduced provisions and political complications in Scene 12. |
—
D. Entering New Kourou
| Trigger / Cue | Immediate Reaction | Future Hook / Consequence |
| 🏙️ Passing into Habitual Belt twilight | Light returns — a relief after eternal dark. | PCs may briefly rest before reaching OfSO HQ. |
| 🏛️ Approaching the Headquarters | Guards recognize PCs and open the gate. | Scene transitions into Scene 12 — The Handover. |
6 | DM Notes
This scene is a transition with teeth — a flexible space that reflects everything the party has endured. Decide early what tone you want for the return:
Fast, safe return: If the players have fought enough or the story needs pacing balance, let them cross the plains with only atmospheric descriptions and the weight of the ticking deadline.
Dangerous, dramatic return: Use Outlaws, Zark ambushes, or weather hazards to create a final test of resourcefulness. If they carry the Nameless Man, every encounter becomes more complicated — his panic, weakness, or sedation change the tactical landscape.
Above all, keep the deadline present. Players should *feel* the urgency without being punished unfairly.
As they approach New Kourou, shift the tone from survival to anticipation — Scene 12 changes everything, and their choices on the Trade Route and in Firetown will echo inside the OfSO Headquarters.
