LUMILIGHT
A Lumilight is a portable, sustainable lighting device that produces light through bioluminescent organisms. It is carried primarily by Federal Courier Service employees, Federal Sheriff's deputies, and reservation guards.
Because Gamma Age humans on planet VOI 700 D must conserve energy and have few resources, Lumilights were developed in 2636 under the aegis of Georgia Hawking's government as a sustainable method of light generation.
The components of a Lumilight
A Lumilight consists of the following components:
- Bioluminescent organisms or cells: The primary light source of the LumiLight is based on the bioluminescent fungus Luminofera dualis (“Shika Me La” in the native language). The fungus emits light as a result of chemical reactions that take place in its cells. The chemical compound most commonly involved in this process is luciferin, which emits light in the presence of oxygen and the enzyme luciferase.
- Energy supply: The bioluminescent cells of Luminofera dualis require nutrients and oxygen to produce light. These are provided by a special biochemical “battery” integrated into the LumiLighjt. This “battery” contains nutrient and oxygen supplies that are continuously delivered to the bioluminescent cells. It is “recharged” by carrying and moving the LumiLight (through kinetic energy) and by introducing new nutrients.
- Housing and optics: the LumiLight is made of a robust but lightweight housing material that protects the bioluminescent cells and energy supply while directing the light in the desired direction. It is equipped with a lens that concentrates the emitted light and focuses the light beam.
- Control mechanism: A simple mechanism for switching the LumiLight on and off is also integrated. When “turned on”, the supply of nutrients and oxygen to the bioluminescent cells is activated, which triggers the light emission. When “switched off”, the supply is interrupted, which stops the light emission.
The components of the Lumilight's biochemical battery
The biochemical battery is the heart as well as the basic requirement for the Lumilight to function. The materials for this component are obtained from organic materials available in the Habitual Belt reserves as well as waste products from ore processing on the Dark Side.
The construction instructions for a simple bio-battery are as follows:
- Electrodes: Copper-zinc electrode is used for the bio-battery. Copper and zinc are metals that are commonly found in ores and can be easily mined and processed in mines. The copper and zinc serve as the two electrodes - the anode (zinc) and the cathode (copper).
- Electrolyte: The electrolyte is the substance that transfers the ions between the two electrodes. For the bio-battery, a simple organic substance is used, such as acetic acid or citric acid, which is obtained from local resources.
- Membrane: A membrane sits between the two electrodes to allow the flow of ions, but at the same time to separate the electrodes and prevent a short circuit. The membrane is made from a natural substance such as gelatin.
- Link to bioluminescence: the electrical energy produced is used to initiate and maintain bioluminescence. The principle of bioluminescence is used here, where cells emit light when excited by a chemical reaction.
This simple blueprint provides a sustainable and biodegradable energy source that can be made from readily available materials. However, it is important to keep in mind that the energy output of the bio-battery is rather low - compared to traditional batteries on Earth - and the Lumilights can be used more as an orientation aid than as a powerful light source.
