KAJANGA

Overview

The Kajanga is a semi-aquatic amphibian-fish hybrid native to the Ralar Region of the Dark Side of VOI 700 D.

Unlike most creatures adapted to the eternal darkness, Kajangas possess large, dark eyes that serve little purpose in the lightless environment of their habitat. They navigate blindly, making them vulnerable prey for apex predators such as the Korozo, the Glaciok or the Zapor.

Despite their awkward adaptation to the Dark Side, Kajangas are resilient survivors, thriving in the volcanic waters near the volcano Ralar’s active lava flows, where warmer temperatures sustain them. Some Kajangas migrate beyond the Dark Side, becoming symbols of luck among certain Native Tribes in the Asari Region of the Habitual Belt.

Physique and Appearance

  • Length: 0.30 meters
  • Shoulder Height: 0.20 meters
  • Weight: 6 kg
  • Skin Type: Scaled, similar to fish, but with four land-adapted limbs.
  • Coloration: Dark, muddy green to charcoal black for camouflage in volcanic waters.
  • Speed: Land: 15 km/h (awkward but swift when fleeing). | Water: 15 km/h (efficient swimmer).

Special Features:

  • Incomplete Evolution: Appears to be in an unfinished evolutionary transition between aquatic and terrestrial life.
  • Large Eyes: Developed despite the eternal darkness, making them useless for navigation on the Dark Side.
  • Cold Protection: A thick fat layer insulates them against the extreme cold of the Dark Side.

Game Mechanics

  • Armor Class (AC): 10
  • Hit Points (HP): 25
  • Speed: 30 ft. (swim), 20 ft. (land)

Attacks:

  • Tail Slap: +3 to hit, 1d6 bludgeoning damage.
  • Panic Leap: When startled, Kajanga can instantly jump 10 feet in any direction, potentially escaping grapples.

Special Abilities:

  • Blind Navigation: Kajanga cannot rely on sight and have disadvantage on Perception checks that rely on vision.
  • Thermal Sensitivity: Can detect heat sources in water, giving them advantage on Survival checks when escaping predators in warm volcanic lakes.
  • Unfinished Evolution: If relocated to the Habitual Belt, Kajangas regain full use of their vision, suggesting they are more naturally suited to environments outside the Dark Side.

Behavior

  • Diet: Omnivorous; feeds on algae, small aquatic creatures, and scavenged organic matter.
  • Social Structure: Travels in loose, scattered groups but does not form strong social bonds.

Survival Strategies:

  • Aquatic Safety: Prefers to stay submerged in warm volcanic waters where predators are scarce.
  • Erratic Land Movement: Moves awkwardly on land, making sudden erratic jumps when startled.
  • Thermal Refuge: Stays near lava flows, avoiding colder areas where predators are more common.

Reproduction and Lifecycle

Reproductive Traits:

  • Egg Laying: Unlike most amphibians, Kajangas lay fertilized eggs in salt water, an unusual adaptation for amphibians.
  • Hatchling Stage: Eggs hatch into tadpole-like larvae, which remain fully aquatic for 4-5 months.
  • Metamorphosis: Develops four limbs and emerges onto land, although it retains fish-like movement patterns in water.

Lifespan and Growth:

  • Maturity: Reaches adulthood at 3 years.
  • Lifespan: 100+ years, making them one of the longest-living amphibian-like species on VOI 700 D.

Myths and legends about the origin of Kajangas

Since the Kajanga seem like an unfinished step of evolution somewhere between fish and land creature and are the only creatures from the Dark Side to also develop eyes, there is a legend among the Native Tribes, that the Kajanga were personally set free on the planet VOI 700 D by alien gods.

In addition, the legend says that the Kajanga are good guardians who watch over the natives and positively influence their fate. From this story also comes the tradition that the Kajanga are seen as lucky charms.
