CRIMSON DEEPFISH

Overview

The Crimson Deepfish is a blind, slow-moving species native to the hydrothermal vent zones of Ralar Bay on the Dark Side of VOI 700 D. Navigating through complete darkness, this fish relies on vibration sensitivity and chemical trail detection to survive in the mineral-rich, geothermal waters.

Despite its small size and lack of vision, the Crimson Deepfish plays a vital role in the local ecosystem, feeding on microbial mats and serving as prey for larger predators like the Glowfin Ray.

Physique and Appearance

  • Size: Up to 15 cm in length
  • Weight: 1-2 kg
  • Body Shape: Elongated and cylindrical, with soft, scale-less skin
  • Coloration: Dark crimson hue that appears nearly black in low light
  • Sensory Organs: Lateral vibration sensors and chemical receptors along body flanks

Game Mechanics

  • Armor Class (AC): 10
  • Hit Points (HP): 5
  • Speed: 30 ft. (swimming)

Attacks

  • Gill Flare: Releases a small cloud of irritating vent gas. Targets in a 5-foot cone must succeed on a DC 11 Constitution save or be disoriented (disadvantage on next attack).

Special Abilities

  • Thermo Navigation: Gains advantage on Survival checks in geothermal environments.
  • Chemical Trail Detection: Can locate vent outflows or nutrient plumes within 100 ft.

Behavior

  • Diet: Microbial mats, chemosynthetic algae, extremophile microorganisms
  • Social Structure: Solitary or found in small pods of 3-6 individuals
  • Activity Pattern: Constantly active due to fluctuating vent emissions

Survival Strategies:

  • Clings to nutrient-rich rocks during periods of turbulence.
  • Uses mild bioluminescence defensively when disturbed.

Reproduction and Lifecycle

Reproductive Traits:

  • Spawning Season: Unknown; believed to be triggered by vent activity
  • Egg Laying: Deposits clusters of gelatinous eggs in vent crevices
  • Hatching Time: 6-10 days post fertilization

Lifespan and Growth:

  • Total Lifespan: Estimated 5-7 years
  • Juvenile Phase: Remain near natal vent system for safety

Tactical Advice for Dungeon Masters

Crimson Deepfish are best used for atmosphere or ecological immersion. Their presence near geothermal anomalies can hint at vent zones, predator lairs, or scientific interest points.

  • Environmental Clue: A pod of Deepfish may signal a nearby vent collapse or heat surge.
  • Specimen Hunt: Players might be hired by researchers to capture a specimen for genetic analysis.
