2 | Read-Aloud Descriptions
Initial Read-Aloud (Scene Opening)
The Local Guarding Trooper Station doesn’t try to look impressive — it tries to look final.

A low, rectangular structure of stacked cargo containers squats against the Civic Ring, its outer skin a patchwork of salvaged starship hull plates, reinforced mining bulkheads, and welded steel braces. Old shipping codes and hazard markings ghost through layers of overpaint. Narrow observation slits cut through the metal — too thin for light, just wide enough to remind you you’re being watched.

Above the roofline, a retractable shortwave mast rises into the dark like a skeletal antenna, cables humming softly as the wind tugs at them.

Warm vapor hisses from geothermal vent stacks at the rear of the building, carrying the faint mineral scent of hot stone and metal. There are no windows. No decoration. Just function.

Inside, the air is cool and dry — deliberately so — threaded with the steady hum of heat exchangers hidden behind insulated panels. Stamped metal flooring rings softly under boots. Electric lanterns mounted on copper brackets cast disciplined pools of light across raw basalt blocks and exposed container walls, their seams scarred by ashstorms and repairs.

Straight ahead, a blast-shielded reception slit divides visitors from the interior. A trooper stands behind it, expression flat, pen already poised over a form. Somewhere deeper inside, a Guarding Bot rolls past — servos whispering, lenses briefly glowing as it scans.

This isn’t a place to argue.
It’s a place where Firetown’s chaos runs out of room.

Staged Read-Alouds (Progressive Descriptions)
| **Trigger / Timing** | **Read-Aloud Cue** |
| **If PCs approach the reception slit to file a report** | The trooper behind the slit sets down his tin mug and slides a fresh form into a metal tray under the window. “State your business,” he says flatly. “Charges, complaints, or permits?” His eyes flick from your faces to any visible weapons, then back again. |
| **If PCs are brought in under arrest** | The main door slams behind you with a hollow metal echo. A trooper walks just close enough to jab your shoulder with the butt of a stun gun. “Eyes forward.” The reception slit is passed without a word; instead, a reinforced side door is unlocked, then relocked behind you as you’re marched down a narrow corridor toward the Detention Extension. The air smells of metal, old steam, and disinfectant. |
| **If PCs get a glimpse into the Guard Room** | Through an open doorway, you catch a snapshot of trooper life: heat-proof coats hanging on hooks, environmental suits stacked by the wall, a battered table with a half-played card game, and a shortwave set quietly crackling with distant traffic from New Kourou. Two troopers look up as you pass, gaze flat and professional. |
| **If PCs glimpse the Armory Nook** | Behind a barred internal door, racks of weapons catch the light: laser guns, stun guns, combat knives, and a compact row of dormant Combat Drones with folded limbs. A Guarding Bot sits in the corner of the armory alcove, lenses dim but swivelling a few degrees as you pass — tracking movement even at rest. |
| **If PCs are escorted into the Detention Extension** | The temperature drops a little as you cross into the Detention Extension. Stone walls close in, lined with reinforced cell doors fitted with narrow viewing slits. A Guarding Bot hums quietly along the corridor rail, pausing at each slit in turn. Faint voices and coughs leak from behind steel: muttered curses, a low song, someone whispering a prayer. |
| **If PCs or the Nameless Man are taken to the Circle Yard at 17:00** | A heavy door grinds open, and the cold hits harder here, even with steam vents breathing warmth through the basalt gravel. The Circle Yard is a walled square under the black sky, its walls high and bare. Prisoners walk slow laps under a Guarding Bot’s unblinking gaze, the Bot perched on a raised metal bracket, scanning back and forth with mechanical patience. The only sound is crunching gravel, soft breath, and the hiss of vented steam. |

3 | Scene Intent
| **Scene Type** | **Player Intents** | **DM Function / Story Link** |
| **Investigation · Detention · Prison Break / Legal Negotiation** | File charges · check on detainees · survive a brief stay in custody · free the Nameless Man by stealth, leverage, or timing | Serve as the “endboss” location for the Firetown arc: either the place PCs escape from, or the last stronghold they must infiltrate to get the Nameless Man out if they didn’t use the Medical Station route. |

4 | Key (N)PCs + Dynamic Cues
| **Name** | **Role / Affiliation** | **Motivation / Goal** | **Dynamic Cues — How They React in Play** | **Wiki Link** |
| **Station Commander Jace Laux** | Commander, Local Guarding Trooper Station | Maintain order · protect his own career | In public: formal, controlled, crisp. In private, with PCs who hold leverage: tense, wary, trying to keep his voice level. Avoids direct mention of the Dark Side Hotel (Scene 8h) / Saloon Gloria (Scene 8b+) incident unless forced. If PCs are detained with evidence in their belongings, Laux retrieves it quietly and immediately shifts into kill-mode: subtle poisoning attempts, staged shootings during dimmed cycles, or arranging a “fatal incident” during Circle Walk. Treats the PCs as liabilities that must be erased before word spreads. | — |
| **Duty Clerk Trooper** | Reception · paperwork | Process forms · keep civilians at arm’s length | Dry, bored tone; uses forms and rules as a shield. Hides any sympathy behind sarcasm. | Guarding Troopers |
| **On-Call Investigator** | Casework & disputes | Close files · avoid extra workload | Curious but cautious; might be persuaded to look into a case if PCs bring strong evidence or a bribe. | — |
| **Cell-Block Trooper (“Jailor”)** | Oversees Detention Extension | Keep inmates contained · avoid escape at all costs | Carries keys, stays near Detention door or Circle Yard access. Suspicious of strangers near the cells. | — |
| **Guarding Bots (5)** | Automated security | Patrol exterior · monitor cells · support lockdowns | Move with slow, deliberate precision. Cell Guard Bot is armed with a Laser Gun; authorized to use lethal force if an escape is detected. | Guarding Bots |
| **Patrol Troopers (16 total)** | Street patrols · rapid response | Enforce curfews · respond to alarms | Mostly faceless uniforms — competent, not heroic. They appear in groups of 2–4 if alarms are triggered. | Guarding Troopers |
| **The Nameless Man** *(if still detained here)* | Mentally unstable detainee in Cell 1 | Survive · cling to fragmented memory | Pale, trembling; repeats his mantra through the door slit: “No talk… to others. No name. No confession…” Withdraws if shouted at; might respond to quiet kindness. | — |
| **PCs as Prisoners** *(if arrested)* | Inmates in Cells 2–3 | Get out · keep gear · watch Nameless Man | Follow daily routine, including the 17:00 Circle Walk with the Nameless Man, offering a rare outside moment for plans. | — |
| **Lethabo Munkh** (only if PCs bought his help earlier) | Guarding Trooper on duty | Honour his promised distraction · stay out of trouble | Nervous, hungover eyes; avoids direct contact. Has secretly arranged a 10:30–11:30 “interrogation slot” for the Nameless Man, logged as a request from the Local Community Center of New Kourou. Creates just enough paperwork chaos to keep attention off the Interrogation Niche while the PCs act. If they make his involvement obvious, he shuts down or vanishes from the scene. | — |

5 | Triggers, Clues & Consequences
**A. PCs Arrive as Civilians (Filing a Charge / Asking for Help)**

| **Trigger / Cue** | **Immediate Reaction / What Happens** | **Future Hook / Consequence** |
| 📝 **PCs file charges (e.g. pickpocket at Firetown Hub)** | Duty Clerk slides forms through the slit, asks for names, time, and location. “We’ll log it. If we recover your property, you’ll be notified.” | PCs officially on record. With good roleplay and solid details, Investigator may later share small intel about the Entertainment District or known thieves. |
| 👀 **PCs try to peek beyond reception** | Duty Clerk leans closer, blocking the view. “Eyes here. This is a station, not a sightseeing tour.” | Subtle hint that wandering is not tolerated; any attempt to slip in must be via another route (rear, side, or during distraction). |
| 💼 **PCs ask directly about the Nameless Man** | If they only know him from notes: Clerk frowns. “Detention cases are internal. You want updates — speak to the Commander and bring a good reason.” | May open a social route later: audience with Jace Laux, if PCs have leverage (blackmail evidence, political pressure, or a recommendation). |

---

**B. PCs Are Brought In Under Arrest**

| **Trigger / Cue** | **Immediate Reaction / What Happens** | **Future Hook / Consequence** |
| 🚔 **PCs arrested after a minor offense ((bar brawl without serious injury, disturbance, petty theft without weapon)** | Troopers disarm PCs, document weapons, and march them into Detention Extension. Cells 2 and 3 are assigned based on group size. PCs experience the daily prison routine. Crucially: if the Nameless Man is still here, the PC detained in Cell 2 can hear him through the narrow ventilation conduit — soft muttering carried through the metal duct. With patience or whispered words, they may even manage brief, fragile communication. At 17:00, they join the same Circle Walk outside.| PCs are detained 1–2 days. After release they receive a registered warning — effectively a parole note in their file. Next offense = automatic sentencing. |
| 🔗 **PCs are arrested for a moderate or serious offense** (assault with injury, resisting Troopers, smuggling, bot interference) | Troopers file an incident sheet; Investigators gather statements; disarm PCs, document weapons, and march them into Detention Extension. Cells 2 and 3 are assigned based on group size. Crucially: if the Nameless Man is still here, the PC detained in Cell 2 can hear him through the narrow ventilation conduit — soft muttering carried through the metal duct. With patience or whispered words, they may even manage brief, fragile communication. At 17:00, they join the same Circle Walk outside.| If the PCs do not find a way to escape they will surely miss their deadline. After 7–12 days, PCs are transported under guard to the Settlers’ Council in New Kourou for trial. Likely sentence: Penal Labor — transfer to a convict camp to work on Free State infrastructure projects (e.g., trade-route extension). |
| 🧾 **PCs argue or resist processing** | Troopers respond quickly with Stun Guns and routine, not drama. “You want longer detention? Keep talking.” | Extra penalties: longer stay, closer watch, possibly shackled during Circle Walk. |
| ☠️ **If PCs are arrested while carrying evidence against Jace Laux** | During confiscation of personal items, all bags, pockets, and containers are logged and stored in the station’s secured locker. As Station Commander, Jace Laux has unrestricted access. Within minutes or hours (DM timing), he quietly retrieves the incriminating evidence. | The moment Laux has the evidence, his attitude shifts from cautious to openly hostile. He begins planning to eliminate the PCs through “plausible” methods: poisoning via the food tray, a staged shooting during lights-out, or arranging for a complicit trooper/prisoner to “deal with” them during Circle Walk. All PCs in custody are now in real danger. |
| ☣️ **Laux initiates a subtle poisoning attempt** (only if he retrieved the evidence) | A food tray or hydration supplement delivered by a Guarding Trooper contains a slow-acting toxin (CON save DC 14). Symptoms appear over 1–2 hours. | PCs may request Medical Station treatment (Scene 8c). If they fail to react or receive help, the poisoning escalates toward lethal levels. |
| 🔫 **If poisoning fails or PCs resist** | Laux implements a direct elimination plan: a staged "escape attempt" shooting during the 19:00 Heating Cycle, when noise and steam mask movement. | If the PCs survive, Laux escalates further: he orders a trusted trooper or a prisoner to finish the job with “plausible deniability.” |
| 🎧 **PCs listen during lockdown** | Through the door slits: snippets of other inmates’ stories, mention of “the old man in Cell One,” and occasional trooper chatter about the Entertainment District. | Soft lore: reinforces how famous the Nameless Man’s story is in Firetown, and how seriously the station treats his custody. |
| 📞 **PCs ask about trial timelines** | Trooper shrugs: “Council’s backlog is brutal. Could be a week. Could be twelve days.” | Builds pressure — their window to escape or manipulate the situation is limited. |
| 🗣️ **PCs attempt to argue innocence or negotiate** | One trooper might listen, but protocol is strict: “Save it for New Kourou.” | PCs need high Persuasion/Deception to change anything locally (DC 15–17). Failure usually worsens their classification. |
| 🕳️ **PCs try to escape** | Alarm → lockdown → Guarding Bot stun protocols. | Failure means harsher charges and guaranteed Penal Labor sentencing. If they actually manage to break out of the building (with or without the Nameless Man), hand over to → Scene 10 — Fleeing from Firetown. |
---

**C. Daily Routine & Circle Walk (17:00)**

Applies if PCs are detained or if they time an outside break-in to coincide with the walk.

| **Trigger / Cue** | **Immediate Reaction / What Happens** | **Future Hook / Consequence** |
| ⏰ **17:00 Circle Walk begins** | Guards open selected cell doors (including Cell 1 and Cell 2 if PCs are inside). Inmates are escorted in pairs or trios into the Circle Yard under the eyes of a Guarding Bot. | PCs gain a narrow window in open air with the Nameless Man, but still within walls, under Bot and trooper supervision. |
| 👂 **PCs talk quietly to the Nameless Man during the walk** | He shuffles along the gravel, eyes down, muttering his mantra. Quiet, kind words may get through: fragments about “the Blues,” “the signal,” or “the note”… but nothing complete. | Roleplay chance to bond with him and convince him to trust the PCs, which may be vital if they later attempt an escape. |
| 🔗 **PCs attempt an escape or to break him out during Circle Walk** | Guarding Bot immediately focuses; trooper shouts order. If PCs move aggressively toward exits or walls, Bot authorizes warning stun-shot, then lethal force if they persist. | Extremely dangerous approach. Use only if PCs insist. Failure can mean injury, longer detention, or even death if they ignore repeated warnings. |

---

**D. Prison Break / Freeing the Nameless Man from Inside the Station**

Use these if the Nameless Man was never moved to the Medical Station, or if PCs choose a direct jailbreak anyway.

| **Trigger / Cue** | **Immediate Reaction / What Happens** | **Future Hook / Consequence** |
| 🗝️ **PCs attempt to steal or copy keys from the Jailor Trooper** | Requires clever set-up or distraction; default is high difficulty. | On success: access to Detention doors and possibly Utility Vault. On failure: immediate suspicion; personal search; possible separate confinement. |
| 🤖 **PCs try to hack or disable the Cell Guarding Bot** | Bot resists; tampering triggers suspicion unless done during Bot maintenance or low-power diagnostics. | A successful hack or EMP-like effect can neutralize Bot threat for a short window. Failure escalates to full-station alarm and lockdown. |
| 🧨 **PCs plan a breakout via Utility Vault / QFB corridor** | Requires knowledge of building layout (from prior intel or very good investigation). | Provides a back-route to the Detention Extension, bypassing main doors. If discovered, station will treat it as a deliberate, high-level attack. |
| 📜 **PCs are able to use blackmail evidence against Jace Laux inside the station** | In a private meeting, Laux’s composure frays. If confronted with strong proof (e.g. Tamsin Lien calendar + testimony): he may negotiate. | Laux might quietly order a “transfer” or “procedural error” that leads to the Nameless Man being moved to a perimeter point… but he will never do this in front of other Troopers. Risk: if PCs push too hard, he could flip, arresting them as a threat. |

---

**E. Using Lethabo Munkh’s Help**

Only if PCs paid him in earlier scenes.

| **Trigger / Cue** | **Immediate Reaction / What Happens** | **Future Hook / Consequence** |
| 🕒 **PCs have helped Lethabo before, received an interrogation slot, and arrive at the agreed time (15 minutes before 10:30)** | Lethabo keeps his distance but subtly confirms the plan: a brief nod, a shuffled stack of forms, a muttered “right on time.” At 10:30 sharp, the Cell Guard Bot receives a logged request from the Local Community Center of New Kourou and escorts the Nameless Man from Cell 1 to the Interrogation Niche. With the Bot removed from its usual corridor post and Lethabo creating low-level administrative noise, one section of the station becomes lightly supervised for exactly one hour. | PCs gain a 10:30–11:30 window to attempt an escape with the Nameless Man. At 11:30, the Bot returns to retrieve the detainee — if the Nameless Man is missing, a partial alarm triggers immediately and a full alarm follows within minutes. |

---

**F. If PCs Manage to Free the Nameless Man**

| **Trigger / Cue** | **Immediate Reaction / What Happens** | **Future Hook / Consequence** |
| 🏃 **PCs escape the station with the Nameless Man** | Troopers react quickly once his absence is noticed: full alarm, shortwave messages, and patrols sweeping Civic Ring and Entertainment District. | PCs must leave Firetown as soon and as quietly as possible. The Nameless Man must be disguised — many settlers know his face from the posted notes. Travel through streets becomes a stealth and planning challenge: use Scene 10 — Fleeing from Firetown to play out the escape route, hiding, possible use of the Firetown Courier Service, and the journey back toward the OfSO HQ in New Kourou. |
| 🧩 **PCs fail to free him and retreat** | The station goes on high alert in the short term, then returns to routine — but records are updated. “Group of troublemakers asking about Detainee in Cell One.” | Firetown becomes harder to operate in; Troopers may recognize PCs later; Nameless Man remains a long-term plot thread. |

6 | DM Notes
  * **Purpose of This Scene:**
    - Act as the structural climax of the Firetown arc: this is where the law lives.
    - Provide a place for formal complaints and investigations that still feels intimidating.
    - Offer multiple paths for dealing with the Nameless Man:
      - Legal pressure and blackmail via Jace Laux.
      - Inside-job prison break using prior intel (circle walk, Bot maintenance, Utility Vault).
      - Or a desperate attempt that might fail, leaving him behind for a future arc.

  * **Difficulty & Tone:**
    - This should feel harder than any previous Firetown location.
    - DCs here are high, alarms are serious, and Guarding Bots are dangerous.
    - Troopers aren’t cartoon villains: they enforce order in a harsh world. Many genuinely believe they’re protecting Firetown.

  * **Running Jace Laux:**
  * Laux operates under extreme pressure — politically, personally, and morally. If the Gloria / Dark Side incident occurred, he is already compromised and terrified of exposure. His outward demeanor is strict protocol and military discipline; in front of other Troopers, he never deviates from regulations.
  * In private, he may negotiate, but only from a position of self-protection. He never responds well to clumsy threats — anything that feels like blackmail triggers his survival instincts.
  * f the PCs were detained while carrying evidence: Laux quietly retrieves the evidence from the confiscated items. Once he has it, his attitude shifts instantly: the PCs stop being “a nuisance” and become a lethal threat. He will use every tool the station allows him — poisoning, staged shootings during dimmed cycles, or arranging a deadly ‘incident’ in the Circle Yard — to eliminate them with plausible deniability.
  * If the PCs still have the evidence (or if he believes they might): He stays wary, careful, and calculating. He may offer deals (e.g., the Medical Station transfer), but only if they give him something he desperately needs: silence. He will not tolerate bluffing.

  * **Running Lethabo Munkh (Optional Ally)**
  * Lethabo is not a hero — he’s a nervous, compromised trooper who helps only because the PCs helped him earlier.
  * His support is specific and limited: arranging the fake 10:30–11:30 interrogation slot and creating low-level administrative distractions.
  * He avoids confrontation at all costs and never openly defies other Troopers.
  * If the PCs act recklessly or draw attention to his involvement, he immediately distances himself — denying help or disappearing from the scene entirely.
- Treat him as a narrow-gap enabler, not a partner: he opens a window, but the escape is entirely on the PCs.

  * **Nameless Man as Objective, Not Combatant:**
    - He is not here to fight. He’s frail, mentally broken, and terrified.
    - Any escape plan must account for his fear and limited stamina.
    - Reward players who treat him as a person, not a package: calmer behaviour, less panic, fewer loud outbursts.

  * **If PCs Are Prisoners:**
    - Let them feel the routine: food through the hatch, inspection, circle walk, lights-out.
    - Use that time to drop lore through other inmates and Trooper chatter.
    - The Circle Walk at 17:00 is their best in-world timing hook for an escape or a plan involving the Nameless Man.

  * **If They Already Rescued Him at the Medical Station:**
    - This scene can still be used later in the adventure as a consequence hub:
      - Filing charges.
      - Facing arrest for their earlier actions.
      - Returning to confront Laux or to see how Firetown reacts to the “mysterious disappearance” from Medical custody.

  * **Endboss Feel Without a Final Boss Fight:**
    - The station’s strength is its systems, not a single big enemy.
    - The challenge is planning, timing, stealth, and social play — not raw damage.
    - If a fight breaks out, it should feel like a serious mistake, not the default solution.
