2 | Read-Aloud Descriptions
Initial Read-Aloud (Scene Opening)
After five or six hours, the convoy reaches the Ralar Region on the Dark Side. Darkness presses against the passenger-cart windows as cold gnaws at the seams. The wheels grind through frozen ruts, Hoos snorting clouds of steam into the black sleet.

Inside, the stove radiates a dull warmth that makes eyelids heavy. One by one, the passengers drift off — the six drunken laborers first, their snores rising like machinery, then the musician Mira Reis, her banjo resting across her lap, chin tilted toward her chest. Even the wiry man with the mark of shame, who had eyed the others suspiciously during the first few hours, seems to be surrendering to the paralyzing power of the warm, swaying, dimly lit car…

For a time, it feels almost safe — until the night tears open in orange.

A burst of fire streaks past the window. Then come the screams — two, maybe three — followed by a long whistle and a blazing red flare that floods the snow with color. The cart jolts to a stop. Hoos neigh. Metal groans. The smell of scorched resin and pellet smoke fills your lungs …

Then — //knock, knock//.
A voice outside, sharp and nasal, cuts through the wind: “Move out slowly — hands where we can see ’em!”

Staged Read-Alouds (Progressive Descriptions)
| **Trigger / Timing** | **Read-Aloud or Short Narrative Insert** |
| PCs follow the instruction and move out | The cold hits like a hammer the moment you step into the wind. Snow whirls through orange light spilling from the stove vents of the forward wagons. Three cart drivers lie where they fell, bolts still hissing faintly in their backs. A tall figure wrapped in animal hide steps closer, voice cutting through the storm: “Kneel down where your drivers kneel already. Keep your hands in the air if you don’t want my friend to send a bolt into your forehead as well…” |
| When the PCs step out and see the dead drivers | Amid the swirling snow, a heavy-set man with a fur-lined hood raises his arm toward you — the convoy leader, Joren Kett. His voice cuts through the wind: “Keep calm and don’t reach for anything. We get out alive by staying still.” He glances toward the figures in the storm, then back to the passengers. “Let me talk first.” |
| PCs stay inside (other passengers leave) | One by one the others stumble out — coughing, sobbing, their hands raised. Heavy boots crunch in the snow outside. Then the voice again, sharper now: “Do you think I can’t count? There’s always ten of you in a cart. Get out — or get killed.” Another rap on the metal door echoes like a drumbeat through the cabin. |
| PCs observe the outlaws closely | One of them steps forward — tall, wrapped in animal hide, face masked in soot. His boots gleam metallic, jointed like the legs of a stolen Butler Bot, hissing steam with every step. “Now be smart,” he snarls. “You’re worth more breathing than frozen.” |

3 | Scene Intent
| **Scene Type** | **Player Intents** | **DM Function / Story Link** |
| **Combat / Survival Scene** | React to ambush · Protect civilians · Decide between fight, stealth, or negotiation | Marks midpoint escalation · Introduces a first-time outlaw crew operating without name or reputation · Leads to aftermath at Scene 5 — Halfway Inn Aftermath. |

4 | Key (N)PCs + Dynamic Cues
| **Name** | **Role / Affiliation** | **Motivation / Goal** | **Dynamic Cues — How They React in Play** | **Wiki Link** |
| **“The Talker” (Outlaw Spokesman)** | Self-appointed leader · Small outlaw crew (unnamed) | Repay cartel debt · Prove himself in first ambush | • Polite compliance → feigns control, orders disarmament
• Resistance → fires warning shot into snow, voice cracks under pressure • Insight check (DC 12) → reveals nervousness, twitching jaw from stimulants | — |
| **“Butler-Leg” (Outlaw with mechanical limb)** | Enforcer · Same crew | Settle debt to cartel · Keep Talker alive | • Constantly scans the darkness, muttering about Korozos drawn by blood scent • Nervous even before fighting starts — leg vents hiss whenever he tenses • Aggression → fires too early, twitchy from stimulants
• Wounded → panics, screams “They’ll smell us! They’re coming!” — may flee or shoot wildly | — |
| **Hollis & Darran (Hired Hands)** | Temporary muscle · Freelance drifters | Paid to guard flanks · Want to get paid and survive | • PCs show strength → hesitate, exchange nervous looks • PCs outnumber or flank them → retreat first
• Offer of leniency → surrender if morale drops below 50 % | — |
| **Hiram Quill** | Passenger · Ex-mechanic with Mark of Shame | Reach Firetown to rebuild life after penal labor | • During the ambush → keeps unnaturally calm, watching every move. • When the masked Outlaws take the passengers’ money, the Talker stops in front of him, stares for a long moment, then moves on without taking a single coin. • Insight (DC 13) → the exchange feels personal, as if recognition flickered between them. • Afterward → Hiram stays silent, avoiding questions, muttering only: “Some debts run both ways.” | — |
| **Convoy Passengers** | Civilians · Settlers & workers | Survive · Avoid drawing fire | • Panic under gunfire • PCs calm them (Persuasion DC 13) → fewer collateral casualties | — |
| **Mira Reis** | Passenger · Musician | Help others · Stay alive | • Calm PCs → hums a low tune granting +1 WIS save vs fear for 1 hour • Comforts wounded or dying → strengthens emotional tone → loyalty thread for Scene 5 — Halfway Inn Aftermath | Mira Reis |
| **Joren Kett** | Convoy Leader / Experienced Cart Driver | Keep everyone alive · Avoid bloodshed | • Barked orders in crisis: “Stay calm! Hands high, no sudden moves!” • If PCs prepare to fight → he hisses through his teeth, “Don’t— you’ll get us all killed.” • PCs stay calm or parley → he nods, keeps passengers organized, tries to reason with the Talker. • After the outlaws flee → he checks casualties and insists the convoy keep moving once carts can roll again. | — |

5 | Triggers, Clues & Consequences
| **Trigger / Cue (Player Action or Event)** | **Immediate Reaction / Change** | **Ripple Effect / Future Hook** |
| ⚙️ **PCs follow the instruction and move out** | Outlaws tighten formation around the cart; the Talker orders everyone to kneel beside the dead drivers. | Sets up intimidation and potential negotiation; gives PCs opportunity to act under threat before belongings are taken. |
| ⚙️ **PCs stay inside while passengers leave** | The Talker grows impatient, pounding on the door and counting aloud. “*Do you think I can’t count? There’s always ten of you in a cart!*” A warning shot hits the door, scorching it. | Next round, outlaws breach the cart; immediate close-quarters confrontation or surrender choice. |
| 💥 **PCs resist, draw weapons, or hesitate visibly** | Outlaw fires a warning shot — a non-lethal bolt striking a thigh or shoulder. The crew yells conflicting orders, nerves showing. | Raises combat tension; hesitation or visible defiance increases chance of injury. May trigger panic among passengers. |
| 🗣️ **Parley attempt with the Talker** | He tests sincerity (Insight DC 14). Failure or visible deception triggers Butler-Leg’s shot; success delays action for 2 rounds. | Successful stall may let PCs plan a counter or detect weakness; failure escalates to full shootout. |
| 💀 **Combat lasts more than 4 rounds** | The smell of blood and burning resin draws predators from the dark. A distant screech — then five Korozos rush the ridge, attacking from behind the outlaws. | Outlaws panic and scatter; PCs may exploit chaos or face new danger from beasts attacking anything that moves. |
| 🩸 **Outlaws scatter as Korozos attack** | When the first Korozos break through the ridge, the four outlaws panic — mounting their Veyras and fleeing into the dark, leaving the convoy behind. | PCs are left alone with five blind predators drawn by blood. Korozos attack nearest living creatures first (smell priority: wounded > panicked animals > moving PCs). Forces a flee-or-fight decision; surviving Hoos may break loose and bolt toward the Halfway Inn. |
| 🔥 **PCs attempt to douse stove fires or secure cargo** | STR or DEX check (DC 13) to pull vent covers or drag crates from heat. | Succeeding earns 50 K reward at Halfway Inn; failed checks risk 1d4 fire damage and smoke inhalation. |
| 💰 **PCs surrender or comply fully** | Outlaws confiscate weapons, money, and any visible valuables before retreating into the storm. | Leads to aftermath where survivors regroup at the Halfway Inn; creates motive for vengeance or pursuit. |
| ⚙️ **PCs or passengers panic or ready weapons** | Joren Kett barks: “Keep it down! They’ll shoot the drivers first if they smell panic!” He gestures to lower weapons. | His intervention can delay combat for 1–2 rounds, giving PCs a chance to parley or reposition. |
| 🗣️ **PCs choose diplomacy or follow Joren’s lead** | Joren speaks up for the group, voice steady but strained: “We’ll do what you ask — no tricks.” | Reduces immediate aggression from the Talker’s crew; +2 bonus on any Persuasion or Deception checks during negotiation. |
| 💥 **Combat or negotiation collapses** | If PCs fight back and kill or wound any outlaw, the rest flee within 2 rounds once morale breaks. | Surviving outlaw may later appear in Firetown spreading rumors or seeking revenge. |

6 | DM Notes
  * **Tone Reminder:** Start in stillness and warmth — sleeping passengers, steady creaks — then rupture it with light, noise, and cold. The fear should feel sudden and physical.
  * **Structure:** Run in two phases —
  * 1. *Opening Volley:* burning carts, chaos, first moral choices.
  * 2. *Approach & Contact:* The Talker’s approach and ultimatum; players choose fight, parley, or flank.
  * **Conditions:** –2 to ranged attacks through sleet; visibility 20 m; cold exposure risk (CON Save DC 10 per hour).
  * **Scaling:** Default: 4 outlaws (Talker, Butler-Leg, Hollis, Darran). For larger parties, +1–2 hired hands may watch the ridge.
  * **Mira Reis:** If she survives and bonds with PCs, she becomes emotional anchor for next scene at the Halfway Inn.
  * **Travel Sync:** Convoy PCs reach ambush after 6 h; Veyra PCs arrive from ridge and can flank — allow simultaneous entry for cinematic pacing.
  * **Transition Hook:** Once the scene resolves (fire out or attackers flee), survivors continue toward the Halfway Inn for warmth, triage, and answers.
