2 | Read-Aloud Descriptions
Initial Read-Aloud (Scene Opening)
Morningstar greets you with fog.

The Trade Route climbs into the lower Atrana slopes, and with every meter the air grows heavier — warm rain, wet timber, and mist that refuses to lift. The jungle isn’t gone here. It’s been cut back.

Somewhere beyond the first ring, chainsaws scream. The sawmill answers with a steady, rhythmic thump — just loud enough to remind everyone why Morningstar exists. Manual Labor Bots move through the haze, hauling timber past lantern-lit porches.

This is where the Hand passed through. This is where his henchmen ate, drank and waited. And if patterns mean anything, this is where someone still watches from behind the fog …

Staged Read-Alouds (Progressive Descriptions)
| **Arrival Condition** | **Read-Aloud / Narrative Insert** |
| **PCs arrive on Veyra** | Your mounts slow as the road gives way to mud and timber planks. Ahead, the town opens in rings — cabins, workshops, stacked logs, lanterns glowing through the mist. Rain beads on fur and leather as you ride past a hunting store with a clean, well-kept sign — *Hale & Hook Outfitters* — its shutters open despite the weather. A little further on, a weathered post stands at a junction. Two arrow-shaped wooden signs point inward toward the Public Services Ring. The lower one reads: “Django’s Diner – Rest Stop.” Above it, nailed at a slight angle, another arrow reads: “Saw’s End – Guest Rooms & Pub.” From that direction drift voices, cutlery on tin, and the unmistakable smell of hot food. Morningstar doesn’t greet you — it presents options. Food, shelter, supplies lie one way … |
| **PCs arrive with a Mortician’s Cart** | The cart draws eyes the way a sudden silence does. People glance at it — quick, uneasy looks — then return to their own hands, their own work, quietly relieved the cart did not come for them. Life reasserts itself almost immediately. A porter tightens a strap. Someone mutters, “Bad slope today,” not as sympathy, but as explanation. As you roll deeper into town, the fog thins enough to reveal weathered wooden signs at a junction: a broad arrow pointing inward reads “Django’s Diner – Rest Stop,” and above it, nailed crookedly to the same post, another arrow points the same way: “Saw’s End – Guest Rooms & Pub.” Steam drifts from cooking vats somewhere ahead. Morningstar doesn’t deny death — it simply refuses to stop for it. If you’re looking for answers, this is where choices begin … |
| **PCs arrive on foot** | Boots sink into wet ground as you leave the Trade Route and step onto a stretch of mud broken by uneven wooden boards — some newly laid, others half-swallowed already, rocking under your weight. Morningstar doesn’t stop for you. It absorbs you. Around you, the town works: saws whining somewhere uphill, bots clattering through timber stacks, shouted tallies cutting through the drizzle. You pass a hunting store with a plain, well-kept copper sign — Hale & Hook Outfitters — shutters open, light inside steady and practical. Right next to it, a weathered post leans at a junction. Two arrow-shaped wooden signs point inward toward the Public Services Ring. The lower reads: “Django’s Diner – Rest Stop.” Above it, nailed crooked but solid, another arrow reads: “Saw’s End – Guest Rooms & Pub" …|
| **PCs arrive with an NKCS caravan** | The convoy rolls straight through the southern gate and into Morningstar’s Courier Station yard. The air is thick with the smell of wet timber, animal sweat, and oiled leather. Hoos stamp and snort as chains rattle and porters move in practiced lines. Inside the station hall, the noise sharpens: clerks shout manifests, boots thud on planks, and settlers crowd a cramped postal counter with folded letters clenched like currency. A notice board nearby is layered with curling pages — day-work offers from lumber camps, names of missing kin, warnings about bandits on the upper routes. Every so often, the clean whirr of a Courier Drone cuts through the din, a reminder that some systems still run on schedules instead of weather. Near the exit, a wooden sign hangs from iron hooks. It reads: “Your stay in Morningstar.” Beneath it, only two entries are listed in careful block letters: “Django’s Diner – Food and Drinks” and “Saw’s End – Guestrooms and Bar.” Below that, the board is empty — scraped clean, like space was left for promises that never came. This isn’t a place you visit for pleasure. It’s a place you pass through, work in, or endure — and from here, you choose where to step next. |
| **PCs are wanted and undisguised** | The fog doesn’t hide you as well as you hoped. A Butler Bot pauses half a second too long. A clerk’s eyes flick to a board and away. Somewhere nearby, boots change rhythm — patrol boots. Nothing happens yet. That’s the warning. From here on, every choice matters: where you eat, who you talk to, how long you stay visible. |

3 | Scene Intent
| **Scene Type** | **Player Intents** | **DM Function / Story Link** |
| **Arrival · Settlement Hub Activation** | Get stable without drawing attention · read the town · decide where to be seen first · turn travel fatigue into direction | Marks the shift from road survival to controlled investigation. Establishes Morningstar’s timber-town logic and social pressure. Converts the abstract Hope clue (Hale & Hook paper, fur pricing, Atrana origin) into concrete, explorable leads inside a living settlement. Unlocks Morningstar as an open hub where choice, exposure, and timing matter. |

4 | Key (N)PCs + Street-Level Dynamics
| **Name** | **Role / Affiliation** | **Motivation / Function** | **Dynamic Cues — How They React in Play** | **Wiki Link** |
| **Station Ledger Clerk** | Courier Station staff | Log arrivals · avoid responsibility |Barely looks up. Polite, brisk, never rude. Values the queue over conversation. | Morningstar Courier Station |
| **Megara Warwick** | Teacher · Morningstar Primary School | Keep the town safe · protect her students · survive | Sits in a hand-built wheelchair salvaged from crash-ship parts. Calm, observant, and quietly attentive to faces.| Morningstar Primary and High School |
| **Guarding Trooper Street Patrol (Pair)** | Local Guarding Troopers | Maintain order · enforce warrants | Move in pairs. Calm, unhurried. They don’t harass — they observe. Escalation is always procedural, not emotional. | Local Guarding Troopers Station of Morningstar |
| **Brom Cedeno** | Yard hand (Off-Shift) · | Get food · get rest · avoid trouble | Mud-caked boots, tired eyes. Practical and blunt. A good source of directions, but avoids anyone bringing trouble. | Fogwood Sawmill Timberyard |

5 | Triggers, Clues & Consequences
| **Trigger / Cue (Player Action or Event)** | **Immediate Reaction / Change** | **Ripple Effect / Future Hook** |
| 🩹 **PCs arrive injured, exhausted, or clearly under-resourced** | Locals don’t ask why. They point toward practical fixes and move on. | Reinforces Morningstar’s survival-first mindset; funnels PCs toward hub locations. |
| 🍲 **PCs seek food. lodging or a place to stabilize ask a local (like Brom Cedeno) for directions** | Brom gives short, practical answers: “Food’s down-ring. Diner or Market. Beds at Saw's End. Don't expect silence.” | Leads PCs naturally to the primary hub locations. If PCs are acting erratically, Brom disengages quickly. |
| 🕵️ **PCs are Wanted and Undisguised (The Ticking Clock starts here)** | Recognition happens passively. A Butler Bot pauses for half a second. The Ledger Clerk's eyes flick to a bounty board. Megara Warwick notices them, turns her wheelchair, and rolls away quietly. | __The Clock Starts:__ The PCs are not arrested immediately, but locals have quietly informed the Guarding Troopers. The PCs have roughly 1 Hour (or 1 Location Visit) to get off the streets, find disguises, or hide before active patrols pinpoint them. If time expires without mitigation, the station's siren wails. Proceed directly to Scene 4g — Escaping Morningstar. |
| 🚨 **Guarding Troopers engage the PCs directly (If the Ticking Clock expires or PCs cause chaos)** | A street patrol moves to intercept. Orders are short and procedural. Resistance triggers immediate escalation. | __If PCs submit:__ arrest and detention. Proceed directly to Scene 4f — Local Guarding Troopers Station.__If PCs resist or attack:__ Troopers call for backup via shortwave devices; nearby patrols converge within minutes. A flying Combat Drone is likely to observe the disturbance, relay the incident, and engage the PCs directly. Proceed immediately to Scene 4g — Escaping Morningstar.|

6 | DM Notes
 * **This scene marks a pressure shift:** The danger changes from road hazards to procedural risk. No ambushes, no shouting — instead: attention, timing, and visibility become the threats.
 * **Carry-over is mandatory:** Do not reset exhaustion, wounds, missing gear, debts, or wanted status. Morningstar reacts to what the PCs bring with them. Stabilization is possible, but it costs time, money, or exposure.
 * **Wanted PCs are noticed passively (The Ticking Clock):** Recognition is distributed, not dramatic. A clerk pauses; a teacher changes direction. Do not have the Guards swarm them at the gate. Give the players a brief window of freedom where they know the net is closing. This turns their first choice of hub location into a high-stakes decision. They only have time for one location visit before the lockdown begins (Scene 4g).
 * **Brom Cedeno is the low-friction interface:** Use Brom to route PCs toward food and lodging without exposition. He is practical and helpful only as long as the PCs are not obviously drawing Guarding Troopers behind them. If pressure rises, he disengages naturally.
 * **Guarding Trooper escalation is procedural:** Orders are short. Movements are coordinated. Resistance triggers systems, not emotions: shortwave calls, converging patrols, drone observation. Once violence breaks out, Morningstar closes ranks fast and remembers.
 * **Hub activation moment:** After the PCs make their first stabilizing choice (food, lodging, medical care, or evasion), explicitly shift into hub mode. Present the hub options and let the players decide where to expose themselves next.
