DEEP MUSSELS
Overview
Deep Mussels are resilient, filter-feeding bivalves anchored to the volcanic rock beds of Ralar Bay on the Dark Side of VOI 700 D. Tolerant of high temperatures and pressure, these creatures thrive in sulfuric tidepools and geothermal fault lines.

Feeding on suspended particles and microbes, Deep Mussels form dense beds along the underwater cliffs and serve as a food source for specialized predators such as the Lava Crabs.

Physique and Appearance
 * **Size:** 10–20 cm shell length
 * **Weight:** 0.5–1.2 kg
 * **Shell:** Thick, dark shell with sulfur deposits; ridged for heat dispersion
 * **Coloration:** Black outer shell, pale yellow interior tissue

Special Features:
 * Filter feeders that can survive near hydrothermal plumes
 * Shells close tightly to endure pressure and scalding water surges
 * Secretes an adhesive resin to bond permanently to rock

Game Mechanics
 * **Armor Class (AC):** 13
 * **Hit Points (HP):** 6
 * **Speed:** 0 ft. (immobile)

Attacks
 * None — passive organism

Special Abilities
 * **Geothermal Adhesion:** Advantage on resisting environmental displacement (e.g., current shifts, tremors)
 * **Toxin Filter:** Can purify nearby toxic water zones over time

Behavior
 * **Diet:** Suspended organic matter, microbial organisms
 * **Social Structure:** Forms dense clusters or "beds"
 * **Activity Pattern:** Continuous filtration while submerged

Survival Strategies:
 * Hardened shells prevent desiccation and predator entry
 * High tolerance for acid, sulfur, and heat gives them a niche few others can occupy

Reproduction and Lifecycle
Reproductive Traits:
 * **Spawning:** Broadcast spawning during seasonal geothermal activity peaks
 * **Larval Phase:** Free-floating larvae attach to hot rock formations after a few days

Lifespan and Growth:
 * **Total Lifespan:** 12-18 years
 * **Growth Rate:** Rapid in early years, stabilizes after maturity

Tactical Advice for Dungeon Masters
Deep Mussels add realism and resource potential to volcanic coastlines or underwater expeditions.

 * **Harvest Conflict:** A tribe or research faction may seek exclusive rights to a Deep Mussel bed
 * **Environmental Puzzle:** A mussel bed may act as a natural filter, hiding clues to an ancient ruin below
