THE ZAPOR

Overview

The Zapor is a powerful aerial predator and scavenger native to the Ralar Region on the Dark Side of VOI 700 D. Perfectly adapted to perpetual night and subzero winds, it navigates and hunts without eyes, relying on refined echolocation and keen scent tracking.

Zapors soar vast distances over ice fields and basalt ridges, then plunge at extreme speed to seize prey or claim carrion. Unlike many solitary Dark Side hunters, they form defensive colonies in the warm microclimates of the Atrana Mountains’ lava-vent caves.

Physique and Appearance

  • Wingspan: ~3 meters
  • Body Length: ~1.6 meters
  • Weight: 5–8 kg
  • Integument: Leathery flight membranes on the wings; dense, dark insulating plumage across torso and legs
  • Head: Smooth, eye-less cranial shield (keratinized exoskeletal plate) capping a long hooked beak
  • Coloration: Charcoal to iron-blue, matte to avoid specular glint in starlight
  • Speed: Dive up to 250 km/h; sustained flight ~100 km/h

Special Features:

  • Echolocation Array: High-frequency clicks and beak-borne resonators give precise 3D mapping of terrain and motion.
  • Cranial Plate: Rigid, eye-less shield protects the sonar organs and deflects ice grit in high-speed dives.
  • Thermal Insulation: Feathered core and leg plumage conserve heat in katabatic winds.

Game Mechanics

  • Armor Class (AC): 15 (agility + protective cranial plate)
  • Hit Points (HP): 65
  • Speed: 100 ft. (fly), 250 ft. (dive)

Attacks

  • Beak Strike: +6 to hit, 1d8+4 piercing.
  • Talon Grab: +5 to hit, 1d6+3 slashing; on hit may grapple Small targets.
  • Wing Buffet: +4 to hit, 1d6+2 bludgeoning; pushes 5 ft. on a failed DC 12 Strength save.

Special Abilities

  • Blindsight 60 ft. (Echolocation): Functions only while the Zapor can emit/receive sound.
  • Silent Ambush: Advantage on Stealth checks while airborne or in cave thermals.
  • Colony Rally: On issuing a hunting call, 1d3 Zapors within 300 ft. may join after 2 rounds.

Behavior

  • Diet: Small mammals (e.g., Talikra, Kajanga), carrion; opportunistic scavenger.
  • Social Structure: Colony nester (20–50); pairs defend ledges and roost niches within communal caves.
  • Activity Pattern: Continuous; peaks during stable winds and thermal updrafts.

Hunting and Scavenging

  • Mapping Glide: Long, silent circuits using clicks to model ravines and ice ledges.
  • Terminal Dive: Locks onto moving targets via Doppler shift in echoes; impact is swift and precise.
  • Carrion Signal: A distinct screech draws colony mates to large carcasses; feeding hierarchy forms on arrival.

Reproduction and Lifecycle

  • Pairing: Mostly monogamous; partners share roost and foraging range.
  • Clutch: 1–2 eggs placed on insulated ledges deep within warm caves.
  • Care: Both parents incubate and feed with partially digested meat.
  • Maturity: Fledge at ~10 months; full hunting proficiency by year 3.
  • Lifespan: 30–40 years.

Tactical Advice for Dungeon Masters

  • Dive Bombers: Use high-speed plunges in canyons or over frozen lakes to shock parties.
  • Echo Darkness: Areas of loud machinery or magical silence can hinder or help Zapors—play with their echolocation limits.
  • Colony Peril: Assaulting a roost risks rapid escalation as multiple adults rally to defend.
