SKYWEEVER

Overview

The Skyweaver, known to the Senti Tribe as “Sha'kuran” (meaning “Ribbon of the Mist”), is a neon-skinned freshwater creature native to Lake Tijonara and the connected rivers of the Asari Region in the Habitual Belt on VOI 700 D.

Exohumans likened its body to an eel, though the Skyweaver differs drastically from Earth eels. Its iridescent leaps and ribbon-like fins earned it spiritual reverence among the Senti, who believe it carries ancestral dreams across water.

Physique and Appearance

  • Length: 60–80 cm
  • Weight: 1.5–2.2 kg
  • Skin: Smooth neon-purple-blue surface with shifting light patterns, no scales
  • Fins: Six semi-rigid fins (three on each flank) resembling wing-like plates; flare outward during leaps, used for propulsion when swimming upstream
  • Tail: Strong tail fin for bursts of acceleration
  • Whiskers: Six long sensory filaments (three per side), faintly bioluminescent, detecting water currents and prey
  • Eyes: Gemstone-like, multifaceted and adapted to low light

Special Features:

  • Iridescent Body Glow: Light refracts across its skin and fins, producing dazzling displays
  • Wing-Fin Leaping: Fins flare outward to boost water jumps, letting the creature snatch insects mid-air or confuse predators
  • Sensory Whiskers: Detect subtle currents and vibrations, glowing faintly when active

Game Mechanics

  • Armor Class (AC): 13
  • Hit Points (HP): 18
  • Speed: 40 ft. swimming, 15 ft. leaping

Actions:

  • Sky Lunge: Leaps up to 10 ft. out of water, fins flared, striking prey (1d6 piercing).
  • Shimmer Burst: Flashes neon light mid-leap, forcing creatures in 10 ft. to make a DC 12 Wisdom save or suffer disadvantage on their next attack.

Special Abilities:

  • Flash Leap: Can leap as a disengage once per short rest.
  • Mist Navigation: Advantage on Stealth and Perception checks in fog or mist.

Behavior

  • Diet: Insects, small amphibians, surface crustaceans
  • Social Structure: Mostly solitary, sometimes loose shoals
  • Activity: Most active in mist, dawn, and dusk

Survival Strategies:

  • Mist Ambush: Uses fog to conceal leaps
  • Light Confusion: Fins scatter light, disrupting predator vision

Reproduction and Lifecycle

  • Spawning: In reed-covered side channels
  • Eggs: Adhesive, laid on vegetation
  • Hatching: 7–9 days
  • Juveniles (“Glitterlings”): More frequent shimmering bursts as defense
  • Lifespan: 10–12 years

Exohuman Usage

In the Beta Age, Exohuman settlers occasionally caught Skyweavers while netting in Lake Tijonara and along the Tijonara River. Their shimmering leaps made them both attractive and difficult to catch, and a few were salted or smoked alongside other fish species. However, the Skyweaver’s thin body, oily flesh, and bitter aftertaste meant it never became a favored staple like the Arlian Sunfish.

For the Senti Tribe, Skyweavers held deep spiritual meaning, believed to carry ancestral dreams across the water. Exohuman fishing of the species therefore caused cultural tension and was frowned upon in shared waters.

With the transition to vegetarian nutrition in the Gamma Age, all Exohuman consumption of Skyweavers was prohibited under the Peace Treaty, leaving the species fully under Native protection and cultural stewardship.

Tactical Advice for Dungeon Masters

Skyweavers bring dynamic light and motion to aquatic encounters.

  • Environmental Puzzle: Trails of leaping Skyweavers can guide or mislead players in fog.
  • Combat Hazard: Shimmer Bursts can alter visibility mid-fight.
  • Spiritual Symbol: A ritual may depend on interpreting their leaping patterns.
