ON BEGINNINGS AFTER THE END
“On New Beginnings After the End” is a speech made famous by politician Aisha Patel from the Communard party in the week before her election as the first Supreme Councilor of the Federal Confederation in 2632 at the Federal Council in New Kourou.
Aisha Patel gave the speech in the former marketplace of New Kourou. The speech was printed and distributed to all Federal Confederation households at the time.
It is considered the policy statement on the economic order of Communardism.
The speech in wording
“Dear brothers and sisters - comrades in destiny!
We stand on the shoulders of giants. It is exactly 211 years since our ancestors set out into the unknown for us, their great-grandchildren. They wanted to make it possible for us to have it better than them one day and to do better than their ancestors did on earth. Because the ancestors of our ancestors destroyed our home planet. They polluted the air, poisoned the waters and the land. Because they always wanted more. More and more. Until everything was destroyed.
But our ancestors drew the necessary line under this dark chapter of the human race!
They had the courage to take the first step towards a new beginning. They didn't do “more of the same” like billions of others around them. They took their destiny into their own hands and began a new era in human history.
Just such a moment has now come for us. We too may and must now write a new, better chapter. But to do so, we must say goodbye to false beliefs and ideologies - just as our ancestors once did.
For centuries, people believed that man always wanted more, that inequality was the driving force for development and competition the key to prosperity. We have seen for ourselves over the past seven years that we were wrong in this belief. Because the system of greed that we have lived after the landing has only led to discord and war.
That's why we want to invite you to reimagine the future. Without inequality, selfishness, greed and competition. But with equality, solidarity and cooperation!
We invite you to build with us a new society that has no blood on its hands, takes nothing from anyone and does not destroy its environment. A society that is sustainable and peaceful. And in which the economy serves to fulfill our natural needs and not to keep creating new artificial needs.
Let's cut off old habits and put everything to the test: What is the point of having money if it only leads to some having more of it than others? Why should we build palaces for a few, when the majority who build them live in huts themselves?
We want to create a system in which we are all equal. Equally full. Equally wealthy. Equally equipped. Just like back then on the spaceship on which most of us were still born. Back then. we were all the same. We all wore the same spacesuits, ate the same food and lived in similar cabins. We were brothers and sisters with a common goal.
If you elect us, we will make this wonderful and peaceful equality possible again for all of us. Because it makes the future possible. And a new beginning after the end of the war!”
Public perception of the speech
Aisha Patel's speech struck a chord with a population ready for a fresh start after three years of war and starvation. Likewise, Aisha Patel skillfully managed to appeal to the collective time of all adult settlers on the spaceship with her speech. And to connect the values that counted on the spaceship, and by which they had all been shaped since childhood, with their political ideas for a new form of society.
Moreover, it was considered extremely clever that Aisha Patel did not emphasize too strongly that the peace treaty would have made it very difficult for people to maintain their old economic system anyway. Rather, Aisha Patel would have sold this difficult situation as a chance for a new beginning, as room for maneuver.
Because of the wide distribution of the speech in the form of printed flyers, Aisha Patel's speech reached nearly every household in the Federal Confederation.
Critism
The Individualists and their constituents criticized the speech for Aisha Patel's setting up a narrative in which the efforts of humans to build a new civilization would have been warlike and aggressive. It was the Natives who started the Great War and equally it was the Anti War Movement initiated by Aisha Patel that brought about the defeat of the people in the Great War.
Moreover, the individualists warned against abolishing the free-market system because, contrary to Aisha Patel's speech, it had brought prosperity and freedom to the settlers. The time on the spaceship Last Frontier would have been characterized by renunciation and putting one's own needs aside - this could not and should not be taken as a blueprint for a new social and economic order.
