MISTTAIL CRAB

Overview

The Misttail Crab is a semi-aquatic detritivore native to the fog-laden rivers and lakes of the Asari Region in the Habitual Belt on VOI 700 D. Found along the Arla River, Orlanda River, Tijonara River, and in Lake Arla, Lake Orlanda, and Lake Tijonara, it is named for its mist-releasing tail that makes entire riverbanks appear haunted.

Misttail Crabs regulate microbial growth by feeding on decaying plant matter and serve as prey to amphibians, birds, and larger aquatic predators. Their mist organs and reed-like camouflage make them a familiar but uncanny sight in Asari wetlands.

Physique and Appearance

  • Size: 15–20 cm across
  • Weight: 1.2–1.5 kg
  • Carapace: Semi-translucent shell with pale mist-like spiral patterns that shift with light
  • Limbs: 4 stout walking legs, 2 elongated digging arms with shovel claws, 2 thin grasping pincers
  • Tail: Segmented fan-tail that flares when threatened, releasing fine vapor resembling fog
  • Back Ridges: Fibrous, reed-like growths that mimic vegetation
  • Eyes: Tall crystalline stalks with opal-like shimmer

Special Features:

  • Mist Release: Tail disperses fine vapor, blending the crab with ambient fog
  • Camouflage Growths: Fibrous ridges resemble reeds, disguising the crab in wetlands
  • Translucent Carapace: Light passes through faint spiral patterns, making it shimmer in mist

Game Mechanics

  • Armor Class (AC): 13
  • Hit Points (HP): 9
  • Speed: 20 ft. (land), 30 ft. (swimming)

Attacks:

  • Claw Snip: 1d4 slashing damage
  • Mud Toss: DC 11 Dexterity save or disadvantage on next attack

Special Abilities:

  • Mist Camouflage: Gains +2 Stealth when fog is present
  • Burrow Instinct: +2 Stealth when hiding under roots or foliage
  • Mist Release: Once per short rest, tail creates a 5-ft fog cloud around the crab

Behavior

  • Diet: Decaying plants, silt microbes, carrion scraps
  • Social Structure: Solitary or small loose groups
  • Activity Pattern: Active during fog events, dawn, and dusk

Survival Strategies:

  • Fog Concealment: Releases mist when threatened, vanishing into reeds
  • Reed Camouflage: Fibrous growths trick predators into mistaking it for plants
  • Burrow and Wait: Digs shallow nests in silt and waits for cover of fog

Reproduction and Lifecycle

  • Mating Season: During rainy, fog-heavy periods
  • Clutch Size: 200–400 eggs per female
  • Larval Stage: Mist-shrimp larvae drift in open water before settling
  • Lifespan: 10–12 years

Look and Feel

In the fog-shrouded shallows of Asari lakes and rivers, Misttail Crabs appear almost spectral. Their translucent carapaces catch stray beams of light, spiraling faintly as if etched by vapor. From a distance, the fibrous reed-like ridges on their backs make them indistinguishable from plants swaying in the water, until they suddenly shift sideways with surprising speed.

When threatened, their tails flare and release a curtain of mist that blends seamlessly with the natural fog, leaving only a ripple in the reeds to suggest their passing. On quiet mornings, clusters of faintly glowing eyes peer from muddy banks like scattered jewels, vanishing the moment boots or paddles disturb the water.

To Exohumans in the Beta Age, these encounters made the Misttail Crab feel uncanny — half-animal, half-phantom — a creature of the haze that could be both dinner and omen. For Native Tribes, they embodied the wetlands’ living breath, guardians of the balance between water, decay, and renewal.

Exohuman Usage

During the Beta Age, Misttail Crabs were occasionally collected along the banks of Lake Arla and the Arla River by settlers at Arla Town. Their size and accessibility made them an easy supplement to the diet of fishermen and dockworkers. The legs contained edible flesh, though small in quantity, while the body was often avoided due to the bitter flavor imparted by the mist organ. Crabs were usually boiled in communal stewpots or smoked in small batches, providing variety in otherwise fish-heavy rations.

However, Misttail Crabs never rose beyond supplemental food. Their eerie mist release unsettled many settlers, and their reed-like appearance led to superstitions about eating “spirits of the fog.” Native Tribes discouraged their overharvesting, viewing the species as integral to wetland health.

With the shift to vegetarian nutrition in the Gamma Age, all Exohuman consumption of Misttail Crabs was prohibited under the Peace Treaty, leaving them as protected fauna of the Asari wetlands.

Tactical Advice for Dungeon Masters

Misttail Crabs bring atmosphere to swamp or river encounters:

  • Environmental Hazard: Tail mist may obscure vision in combat, creating surprise openings
  • Cultural Resource: Their carapaces are prized for lightweight translucent armor
  • Foraging Sign: Trails in mud or strange reed-like “plants” turn out to be crab ridges
  • Alien Flavor: Their mist release and glowing shell add eerie ambiance to foggy explorations
