ROLE OF THE LOCAL SHERIFF

Overview

The Local Sheriff serves as the primary law enforcement authority within each ExoHuman settlement, ensuring day-to-day safety, enforcing laws, and addressing local concerns. While the Federal Sheriff oversees law enforcement across the Federal Confederation, Local Sheriffs focus on their specific communities, adapting to unique cultural, political, and environmental dynamics.

Unlike other settlements, in New Kourou— the capital of the Federal Confederation — the Federal Sheriff is also the Local Sheriff, a distinction that reflects the city’s central importance in governance and law enforcement.

Local Sheriff Responsibilities:

  • Community Policing: Addressing routine issues such as theft, disputes, and public disturbances.
  • Local Investigations: Investigating low-level crimes within the settlement that do not have inter-settlement implications.
  • Public Safety Management: Maintaining order during events, emergencies, or civil unrest.
  • Cooperation with Federal Authorities: Supporting Federal Sheriff investigations or actions within their jurisdiction when required.

Federal Sheriff Responsibilities (Compared):

  • Nationwide Jurisdiction: Authority over all settlements, focusing on serious crimes, political offenses, and organized crime.
  • Federal Oversight: Monitoring and ensuring compliance with federal laws and policies.
  • Coordination Across Settlements: Facilitating cooperation among Local Sheriffs and managing inter-settlement security.

While Local Sheriffs retain significant autonomy in their settlements, the Federal Sheriff holds superior authority and can intervene in local matters under specific circumstances, including violations of federal laws or situations escalating into inter-settlement concerns.

Election Process

Local Sheriffs are elected every two years by the residents of their respective settlements. This process ensures that the priorities and concerns of each community are represented in local law enforcement.

In New Kourou, the Federal Sheriff automatically assumes the role of Local Sheriff as part of their broader mandate. This unique arrangement underscores New Kourou's position as the political and administrative heart of the Federal Confederation.
