FEDERAL WOOD PLANT (FWP)
Overview
* **Location:** Industrial Ring, Morningstar
* **Address:** NW Industrial Ring Road 1
* **Surroundings:** A clustered campus of timber facilities at the Industrial Ring’s northwest quadrant; dispatch lanes connect to the FCS depot.

The Federal Wood Plant (FWP) is the Confederation’s integrated timber campus for harvesting intake, milling, carpentry, and wood recycling. Upstream supply comes from the Federal Timber Yard (off-site managed parcels east of Morningstar), where trees are grown and felled under FAA permits and Peace Treaty quotas; tagged logs are convoyed to the campus for processing. Founded in 2633 under Aisha Patel and operated by the Federal Allotment Agency (FAA), the FWP supplies structural lumber, furniture, civic fixtures and crates while complying with the Peace Treaty and the FWRS circular-use mandates.

The campus traces back to the Beta Age as the privately run Fogwood Sawmill Inc., which held near-exclusive logging rights in the Atrana foothills; in 2632, after the Peace Treaty, Fogwood was nationalized into the FWP. Its principal, Hanata Ito, was passed over for the new directorship due to destructive logging methods and later left for Firetown, becoming a figurehead in the Individualist Party.

Hussaini Carpentry (founded by Jaque Hussaini in 2626), which cooperated closely with Fogwood Sawmill as a private company in the Free State of Settlers, was also integrated into the Federal Wood Plant through nationalization.

Architectural Significance
* **Construction Materials:** Timber post-and-beam over Atrana stone plinths (granite/gneiss); mycelium-brick infill; plank siding; poly-glass clerestories.
* **Floors:** Predominantly single-storey bays: Sawmill Hall, Carpentry Shop, Joinery & Fixtures, Drying Sheds, Recycling Shed; plus a small mezzanine for ledgers and planning.
* **Design Aesthetic:** Linear flow from log yard → mill → drying → shops → packing; covered walkways and sight-lines from a central foreman’s gallery.
* **Lighting (No Electric High-Bays):** Clerestories and light wells tuned for ambient twilight; after-hours, hooded oil lamps and baseboard Luminofera dualis runs.
* **Ventilation / Acoustic Control (Passive):** Ridge vents, wind scoops, baffled walls; sawdust traps and felt screens; no powered HVAC.
* **Energy Use (Low-Draw):** Overshot waterwheel/line-shaft drive (seasonal stream) with flywheel takeoff; back-up treadle/hand tools; kiln/wash heat via district biogas; analog gauges.

Building Structure
* **Log Yard & Scaling Deck:** Log skids, measure sticks, bark piles; chain-of-custody desk.
* **Sawmill Hall (Sash/Frame Saw):** Waterwheel-driven line shaft; debark benches; headrig, edger, and trim bench; slab chute.
* **Drying Sheds & Kiln:** Stickered racks under roof; low-temp biogas kiln; moisture boards.
* **Carpentry Shop (Rough-to-Fine):** Bench rows, planes and drawknives; treadle lathes; glue press; finishing corner (plant oils/borate bath).
* **Joinery & Fixtures Bay:** Doors, windows, desks, bunks, crates, signage posts; hardware bench.
* **Pole & Truss Yard:** Peeled poles, scarf joints, truss jigs; tarpaulin store.
* **Recycling Shed (Wood Recovery):** Sort/denail, rip-down, patch stock; sawdust briquette press; mulch bins.
* **QA & Ledger Mezzanine:** Tally boards, templates library; defect log and release stamps.
* **Packing & Dispatch:** Crate bench, straw fill, seal press; wagon staging to FCS.
* **Restrooms:** AuroraSan stalls (staff & visitors) with wash-basins.
* **Yards & Waterworks:** Waterwheel race and sluice gate; tool shed; fire cisterns and hand-pump carts.

Look and Feel
Resin and fresh sawdust hang in the air; the sash saw clacks in a steady water-driven rhythm. Perpetual twilight spills from clerestories onto stickered stacks, while calm Lumi bands mark the bench lines after hours. Plane curls pile in wicker baskets; moisture marks chalked on board ends; every lift, cut, and crate is tallied in pencil and stamped in ink. It’s orderly, audible, and low-energy — craft scaled for a whole settlement.

* **Deputy Patrols:** Scheduled Industrial Ring passes; incident logbook countersigned daily.

Player Interaction Possibilities (Legal and Illegal)
**Legal interactions:**
* Receive a GAIA assignment as sawyer’s aide, sticker runner, bench carpenter, joiner, recycler, or QA tally clerk.
* Deliver sealed crates to civic sites or swap broken fixtures for repair under work orders (as Federal Courier Service employee).
* Assist with guild/academy tours (catwalk guiding, safety demo).

**Illegal interactions:**
* Swap route labels or forge crate seals to divert high-grade beams.
* Spark arson in slab piles or kiln vents to mask a theft.
* Steal templates for door/window sets to equip outlaw hideouts.

Tactical Advice for Dungeon Masters
* **Adventure Hook — Ash at the Waterwheel:** Before dawn the sash saw falls silent—someone jammed the wheel race and a fresh truss shipment has vanished from the dispatch yard. A watchman is found bruised, gagged, and stamped with a counterfeit QA seal. Fearing arson to erase the trail, the Sheriff deputizes the PCs: clear the wheel, audit stamp ledgers, and shadow swapped route labels through the Industrial Ring before the thieves torch the slab piles and disappear into the mountains.
